We have discussed many things we might need for survival if the SHTF,but i don`t remember anyone bringing up footware and what some might all ready have or for those that might not have thought about it yet.More than likely a good boot would be appropriate to handle any terrain you might encounter if your means of travel comes down to walking. You would want something that would be durable, but lightwieght, waterproof, but able to wick moisture and most improtant, comfortable if they were worn on a daily basis. Then there would have to be socks that would provide the same qualities as the boot. There are many brands out there that boast to be the best, but i am curious if anyone has all ready purchased something for this purpose or knows of any particuler brands that they have or have had before that they would recommend. And for those that haven`t thought about it,might want to do so,and as all ways learn from the vast field of acumulated experience and knowledge held by our many bersa members. Here is a site that offers a nice line of products that might fit the bill.

No particular brand of boot, but some type of lace-up high top boot would be prefered for ankle stability, and fairly thick soled for protection in different enviornments as well as wear issues. Beyond that, comfort, and the climate you would be spending your life in would determine the rest of the construction of the boot. I have my boots for various reasons, mostly comfort, support, protection and I wear them on at least a weekly basis if not more often. I would never pick a pair of boots and then let them set in the closet until a survival situation occured. I simply like the Chuckas, and have a good broken in pair, but for the most part, I wear the low top chuckas for casual wear. If I were in colder climes, I would consider insulated boots, in constantly wet climes, a boot that would perform to waterproof, although a boot waterproofing added to leather would be my preference, so boot could breathe. Socks, no brand, but definitely wool as wool does not absorb body moisture, A sock thickness compatible with the boot and comfortable with the boot. Footwear is important to footcare, which would be a very important consideration of survival.

I wear "Danner" brand boots. The are a over the ankle 12" lace up combat type boot. Its a tuff kevlar fabric boot that has "thinsulate" for warmth and Gortex for waterproofing. They are very light weight and I wear them daily for work. They are warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

I have a very similar Redhead brand (BassPro) 12" with 200gram thinsulate and goretex. For those that haven't done some serious walking in a while remember to wear a silk liner sock inside your heavy sock or tape your heels with athletic tape to prevent blisters. Heavy Vibram soles are important to prevent penetration and stone bruising. A steel shank is good too.

The last couple of years I have used the Bass Pro Shop RedHead snake boots. They take a bit of breaking in as do most boots but are very comfortable, water proof, snake proof and warm. They are by no means a snow boot but some Toasty Toes in the bottoms on a 20 degree day makes em nice.

I agree, the "Danner" boots are great Mason.....I just ordered a pair, probably very similar to yours, but they are 8" over the ankle, and they are for women......I love boots, and I own at least 12 pair (conservative guess).......Two pair are fashion boots, the rest are work, motorcycle, hiking and western boots............

I picked up a pair of Vasque Zypher hikers 8 years ago and they have worn extremely well and with zero break-in period, my feet were greatful for the support and comfort from day one. They are in need of a new sole and I just may get them done, but in the mean time I got another pair of Vasque, a bit heavier than the others and they are a pain in the butt. Too stiff I guess, because I've had them for over a year and wearing them only when off pavement, they still aren't broken in after many, many miles. No blisters, but I take precautions against them and the boots just aren't comfortable. Since I got them at REI, I'll be returning them I think and will go in search of a good pair of Danner boots.
Anyway, to the original post, I agree that having a sturdy, supportive and comfortable boot is the way to go. A boot capable of both pavement and off road, as well as having enough stability and support, so that the wearer can carry a pack without breaking the boot, or feet down would be perfect. The above mentioned 2nd pair of Vasque weren't the answer for me and this time I want a boot that is made in America. Hopefully danner makes them here.
