Talking to the police today while Packing heat...a Question

There has been alot of breaking into vehicles going on in my neighborhood as of late, including my own. ealier today I noticed my small grills in my bumper were missing out of my Dodge truck and on my neighbor's dodge also, and they took his fog lights. I just pulled in from going to KFC and the Police were out front, my neighbor had called them, and he motioned for me to come over. Well hmm I thought to myself what do I do now? I know that if you get pulled over you have to desclose to the LEO that you are a permit holder and you are carrying, but what if you just walk up and talk to one? Is it the same? I thought fast and said "let me run this food in and I will be right over" went in and put my LCP away and went back out to talk to them...I think its a good thing I did because he asked if we would sit in the squad car and talk to him so he could take some note's Wheww!!!!!!!!! There is no way I could have got into that police car with a loaded weapon without telling him I had it. How would you guy's of handled it? What should have I done? Do you have to disclose to the Leo that you are carrying when you even just talk to them?

Re: Talking to the police today while Packing heat...a Question

This is something I've been thinking about lately also.  In Michigan we are required to dislcose if we are carrying when having interaction with an officer.  I've been wondering just how incidental that interaction can be.  During the holiday weekend there was an officer directing pedestrians and traffic at a busy intersection.  He chatted with us while we were waiting to cross... does that count?

I think I would have probably either did what you did or tell him.  You were interacting with the officer in an official way and in Michigan I believe you'd be required to tell him.

Re: Talking to the police today while Packing heat...a Question

I think it depends on how the law is written in the state where you are. In Utah, we're required to disclose that we're carrying if we are approached by a LEO, and we have to do it at the earliest opportunity. Clearly you were uncomfortable and did the right thing by taking the food in and securing your firearm properly, if that's what you did., Smile [:)]

WOW..you carried inside a police building? Thats very much against the law here. I guess I just never talk to the police ever, so its different for me. A friend that used to work for me is now a LEO and I did talk to him and told him I had CCP. He said why do you feel like you need to carry? Yes finally I get to say something I read on here about that very question I said "Because when seconds count the police are only minutes away" He laughed and said  "thats a good one". Then he asked if I was carrying now, I said yes does it make you nervous? he said "No I know I can still kick your asss" I laughed and said "Not with all the donouts it looks like you put away in the last year. But Like I said, I know him, so it was just in fun. Other LEO's make me nervous though when I am carrying for some reason.

He askd what I was carrying and I said a Bersa .380. Lets just say he did not think highly of the Bersa's

I would have probably did what you did, why bother with telling if you can avoid, which your situation allowed you to do.

Re: Talking to the police today while Packing heat...a Question

In NC, you're required to inform a LEO that you interact with that you have a CCW license and you're carrying.  Over the past 2 1/2 year that I've had my license, I've needed to interact with several LEO's for one reason or another.  I've always informed them of my license and I've always been treated with respect and courtesy.

Last week, some idiot cartwheeled his car in my yard.  Somehow, he wasn't hurt, but a couple of passing EMT's in black vehicles with blinky lights stopped and waited for the LEO to come.  When he did, I met him first and informed him of my license and weapon.  He looked at me and then at the blinky lights, and then told me to go stand off to the side.  He then went over to the blinky lights, got their story, and sent them away since they weren't needed.  Later, I asked why he sent me off to the side and he said he knew I was holding a license and carrying my weapon, but he didn't know who the other guys were or what they were doing there.  He wanted to deal with them first and get them out of there.  Made me feel kind of good that he implied that he trusted me.

Generally, I wouldn't want a LEO to find out that I had an unannounced weapon.  That would make him suspicious and uncomfortable with me, and I don't want that.  So far, all the LEO's I've interfaced with have been quite comfortable when I informed them of my weapon, which makes it easier to do so.

If you come to NC, be up front with the LEO's and you'll be fine.
