kel tec p3at vs ruger lcp 380

I went out yesterday in search of a kel tec 380, found one for $289.99 plain black matt finish. I was thinking that this was high so came back home and started looking up gun dealers in In. I found a gun shop 35 miles from me who said he had 3 new lcp's but he wanted $319.99 which I also thought was high. So here I am with no pocket pistol, oh and btw that's what I have decided on for summer carry. I gotta tell ya that I was tempted by the lcp but not sure if it was because they are hard to come by because I had heard 2 other places had waiting list of 20 ppl. I am a little confused so I thought I would ask you folks your honest opinion if you were me which would you buy? I know that I have heard and read all the stories of kel tec and jamming issues having to do the f&b thing but I have also read that ruger lcp having some of same issues. Yes kel tec cheaper but a $30 diff not as important as quality of a sd gun. lcp has a better finish and the manual lock slide which would be nice for in case of jam and cleaning, but kel tec has been making this smaller gun longer and I am wondering if chances would be better with their second gen pistol. I was wondering anyone here with maybe both with a opinion? I apologize for the long post but would welcome any opinions and advice. I know some not happy about Bill Ruger's past on automatic weapons ban but would like to keep this topic about the 2 guns and what you would do if you were me as this would be my second hand gun purchase and again your thoughts and opinions would be welcomed.

    Thanks

    Jeff

Re: kel tec p3at vs ruger lcp 380

I can't say much for the Kel-Tek because I have never fired one, but as for the Ruger LCP you can find alot of info at http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=abbbf7d058ef17e0a5d3fd3fb24f7959

The old members at Rugerforum are right down sick of all the new taffic from the LCP and it seems alot of first time Ruger owners are flooding the place, they even have a very long post "Is anyone tierd already about the LCP" going on...Its 13 pages now!. Don't know why they are so upset because we would welcome all those new members for sure. You can find alot of info there about the LCP.

$319 is high for the pistol but its in such demand, A local gun shop here sell's them for 289.00 when they have them which is hardly ever.

Also incase you missed it. there is a small review here on Bersatalk of the LCP

Re: kel tec p3at vs ruger lcp 380

I have a P3AT and I carry it ever day.  It is the second generation one.  When I first received it I cleaned it really good.  I have never seen a new gun dirty like this out of the box.  I can say I have never had one problem with it to this day.  I knew what I was buying before I purchased it. I did a lot of forum reading so when I purchased it I knew what to expect and do before shooting it.   I also have shot  WWB from Wal*Mart and I shoot mostly reloads at the range that I reload.  I never carry reloads.  I can't say anything bad about it from my end.  I wouldn't have a problem with my wife caring one at all.  Yes it isn't a $500.00 firearm.  I clean it every two weeks, because I carry it every day.  I have almost 500 rounds though it by now.  But you are the one that is going to have to carry it every day and rely on it so you are the one that has to make that decision on witch one to purchase. I would read everything that you can on it and then go for it.  Get on the forums.  Keep us in the loop on what you decided to buy and how you like it. We like to read reviews.

Re: kel tec p3at vs ruger lcp 380

I've had a LCP for a couple of months now and couldn't be happier with it. Took it out of the box, wiped off the oil, ran boresnake thru barrel and been shooting every since. No fluff and buff or other nonsense required.

Ruger has, in about 4 months, identified the problems and corrected them, something KT doesn't seem to be able to do.

The latest version of the LCP has the notch cut into the reciever before it is blued or painted or whatever the finish it., So its easy to tell if the latest model. The way they sell, I doubt you would find one that has been sitting around very long.

Ash, actually I did see that review and it was good. I also sent you a pm yesterday check your inbox please. Snaredog you are right and that is what I am currently doing is checking forums on both and getting opinions then will make my decision, thank you for your reply and I will keep everyone informed of my decision and range report when i actually make up my mind. Danny thanks for your reply I am glad your lcp is what you wanted it to be and it is encouraging to hear that you are not having any problems as this is new to ruger. I know ppl say it is a kel tec copy but if you can have same gun with better finish and slide lock it does make one who does not own either stop and think.

    Thanks

    Jeff

Re: kel tec p3at vs ruger lcp 380

It doesn't matter to me that its a copy; that's what happens when you don't patent your ideas. I also have a Skyy CPX-1 which is a copy of the P11, but better fit and finish and it looks like  i have a good one of those too; there have been some problems with those. On both occasions i was gonna give in and buy a KT, but upon handling  both of them side by side, it was a no brainer..

Now, I guess MT will be along any minute to slap my hand

Re: kel tec p3at vs ruger lcp 380

Just got back from the lgs, the guy was alright. I was able to get him to come down from $320.00 to $300 for $321.00 out the door. I had the opportunity to compare both side by side, kt and lcp, I thought the lcp felt and looked better. I know looks are not what counts but for a guy that knows nothing about either, only what I have read, the lcp won me over that is no offense to kt just seeing them side by side, I was sold on the lcp. Now I cannot wait to get it cleaned up and hopefully take it out sat for a test run. Danny you are right, does not matter if a copy after all many things in this world are copied. What matters is how it performs. Wish me luck. Big Smile [:D]

I too have toyed with buying an LCP...but they have not been available in any LGS where I live...which left gunbroker, and with all the fixes that have been done on that gun, it is difficult to tell what you are getting sight unseen. My brother has the Kel-Tec 380 which I have shot...it was ok, but the barrel seems very thin to me on that gun. I have been very happy, however with the PF9 though...so much so, I just picked up a brand new hard chrome one for $279...those guns shoot great for me, the quality seems better than the other kel-tecs I have seen, and I love having the larger caliber...and it works great for me as a pocket gun in my Uncle Mikes.

I will probably pickup a LCP when the design, prices and availability stabilize though...

I to am wanting to get a 9mm but I already had a thunder 380 and was wanting a small pocket pistol so i went with the lcp that way I could use same ammo. I don't know if I will be able to get the 9mm with finances being what they are. I am wanting to get some other things like a pocket holster maybe pinky rest etc...so 9mm may have to wait till next year. i got home late with lcp so hoping to clean it up today and try shooting a few rounds later today or tomorrow.

I know what you mean about the quality looking better on the HC. I actually started out looking at a navy blue frame with HC slide on a p3at on display and told guy I wanted one he went to back room came out and said they were out and was not sure when they would get more in, but that was a purdy gun. He would have sold that to me but I did not want to buy a display that everybody and thire bro played with.

By the way, the hard chrome PF9's are very hard to come by, much like the LCP's they go for a premium on gunbroker...ddsranch.com just got some in and are selling them for $279, which is a good price if you are interested in one...I'm sure they won't last long!
