    Growing food

Well since MT is threatening to shut us down, I guess I will give an update on my potato experiment.  My wife had a really big fiberglass flower pot that kept killing her flowers so I tried planting potatos in it with my daughter this spring.  I just used an old tater from the store cut in two.  I drilled extra holes in the bottom of the pot for good drainage and planted the two halves in 4 inches of soil.  As it grows I keep adding soil.  The pot is now full, about 18in deep and growing well.  We will see if it actually yields any potatos.  I have heard some of the store bought taters are hybrids that may not produce.  I tried this method as an alternative to the "stack of old tires" method I found on the net.  Harvesting should be as easy a dumping out the pot.  I have also heard of people using cardboard boxes or 5gal buckets.  If I get nothing else, my 3 year old daughter gets a kick out of taking care of it, and I would happily pay for that.

I may plant a little garden next year.

Any other green thumbs out there.

Never know if you never try.Plus like you said. The time spent with your daughter is well worth the effort and she learns something from it.Best of luck with your experiment.

Why wait until next year?  This Fall put in a fall garden, Broccoli is a hoot to grow and any you don't harvest has a great yellow flower display.  I keep garlic, rosemary, taragon, sage, oregano all growing around my patio to chop, add to steaks/chops use in the smoker...etc.

Also makes the backyard smell great.  This is in 100 degree summer weather here in the Dallas area.

Besides the spices you've mentioned R.Ph. 380, you can grow mint (to put in iced tea...maybe) and cilantro for salsa, and such.......very easy to grow.....

    Re: Growing food

I have a five year old and we have a pretty nice garden.  Your right, kids love it. They really feel part of something. The graden serves a number of purposes.  We have a herb garden, but spinach, carrots, lettuce, tomatoes, peas and corn are coming along nicely.  You can still grow green leafy vegetables this summer.  Nothin like going out and picking your dinner salad.  Great suggestion about mint.  Goes great in sun tea.  BTW, a helpful hint.  When snails become a problem, put out two bowls of beer.  Snails crawl in the bowls and drown in the beer.  Safe, no toxins, and in my case a touch of envy for the snails to die in a glorious way like drowning in beerBig Smile [:D]

When I lived in the country, which BTW, wished I still did. My wife and I used to love gardening and even now in town I took 2 bags of 40lb top soil, take a razor knife make x on top of bag corner to corner plant tomato plant in mound dirt around and watch grow. I also have a tomato plant in a 5 gallon bucket by the patio, like a fresh slice tomato on that burger off grill.

Update on potato experiment:  Apparently some "store bought" potatoes will not reproduce.  You need to buy certified seed potatoes. (or maybe from the farmers market)

It is time to harvest mid season potatoes and I went out to dig around in my pot only to discover my potato plant was baren.  Not a single tuber.  Anyone ever experienced this?  If SHTF and you planted some old potatoes you might be in for a bad suprise.

Interesting. I'm sitting here with my long time gardening 85 year old grandmother and she tells me a potato planted too late will make a nice plant, but no taters. She says mid march here in southern OK at the latest. She also uses store bought potatoes with no problem.

She may be right.  I planted the first week of april in Charlotte.  I grew up hoeing potato rows and squishing bugs, but that dosen't mean I paid attention.
