Well, not singling out just the .380. I use both. They serve different purposes. I sometimes use a bore snake when at the range to give a quick clean to the barrel if I am shooting more than 50 or so in one gun. I use brushes for more thorogh cleanings generally. I use lots of patches after the brushes, and to oil the bore.
In my opinion there is no one method. I use all of them to get the job done to my satisfaction.

I use bore snakes for quick cleaning at the range and break out the brushes and jags when I get home.  The cleaning process is part of my shooting ritual... I have never had any malfunctions of any of the guns I have owned due to lack of maintenance.  A shooting buddy of mine however, uses the boresnake exclusively, and basically is only cleaning the chamber/barrel of his guns, and does nothing about the "actions".  He has had many failures while we're out shooting.   If you take the time to disassemble your guns while doing the routine (regular) maintenance, you also learn a little bit more about your toys. IMHO

I purchasd a boresnake and some clp for now as they didnt have a handgun rod when I went in. It sounds like I will use the snake in the field and the rod at home. I was originally planning on field stripping it, using the snake, taking a tooth brush to every other part, and then some clp as lube as well but I think I'll pick up the rod anyways. My momma always taught me to take care of my toys :)

I use the shake for the shotgun shooting trap and the rods for the guns at the house..
