My first attempt at a holster

Well, I got my new Kahr CW40 today and decided to try to make a holster on my own.  Because I have no actual skill at forming leather I decided to use a combo of Kydex and leather.  It isn't finished yet, I only put 4 rivets in it to do a dry run to see if I liked it enough to bother getting the stuff to finish the leather.  It's not too bad but I'm still not sure about this whole IWB thing.  So far, It's not near as comfortable as OWB.

Anyway here's some pics of the holster/gun and the CW40 next to the BT380 for comparison, they're very comparable in height and length but the CW40 is quite a bit thinner (which is one of the reasons I got it).

If finish looks anything like start, you will have a fine looking holster. I like the kahr, good looking gun. give us a range report asap.

Carrying a pistol isn't suppose to be comfortable.  Its suppose to be comforting . Clint Smith said that I belive. IWB normally requires slighty larger pants size to work best.

When I'm standing it's pretty comfortable but sitting is a different story.  Maybe I'm just too used to the feeling of Nate's awesome holster Big Smile [:D]

I use about 50% IWB carry and when I'm not wearing jeans I like a Docker style pants made by Hagger.  They have something they call a "comfort fit waist band".  Basically they have a little elastic panel at 3:00 and 9:00 that allows for about an inch or so of expansion.  Perfect for CCW, but still fit nicely when I'm not armed, work, mall etc.

Re: My first attempt at a holster

Thanks for all the encouragement everyone Smile [:)]  I've been wearing it around and have found that if I adjust the holster to its highest setting on the clips it is much more comfortable.  This leaves the Kydex portion sticking out of my waistband about an inch or so but it keeps the bottom edge of the holster from digging into my leg when I sit.  I figured that since I wear my pants so low on my hips instead of up on my waist that I'd have some challenges with an IWB.  That's why I wanted to make one on the cheap to see if I like it enough before I start investing big bucks into one.

Re: My first attempt at a holster

One thing that helps a lot on the comfort with a leather IWB is if you extend the leather on the side toward the body up a bit past the beaver tail and hammer as a sweat guard and down about 1/4" or so past the end of the muzzel then curl the leather toward the gun so you have smooth rounded edges against the body rather than solid edges.  The sweat shield curling SLIGHTLY over/onto the top of the gun also helps with retention if you are running, hikeing or working and such with it on where you get in positions or jarring that could help it come out.  Mine will hold the gun in upside down even without the waistband to improve retention but they still slide out easy for a draw, kind of like a molded kydex holster.

Re: My first attempt at a holster

Well, here's the finished product.  It was kinda fun researching and making my own.  If anybody wants a custom fit holster just contact Nate Gable at UBG holsters.  This one was fun but it wasn't fun enough for me to want to do more of them Smile [:)]  Nate must be really fast at this stuff or he's not making any money to speak of because if I were to charge a reasonable shop rate for this thing it would cost $300 Stick out tongue [:P]

I ended up taking quite a bit of leather off below the clips and I took a lot of Kydex off the tabs that were riveted to the leather; that fixed most of the comfort issues.  I also extended the sweat shield to cover a little more.

It's still nowhere near as comfortable as the UBG Regulator OWB that I normally use (I like it so much for my BT380 that I ordered one for my CW40) so the Regulators will be my normal carry option.  Since I normally wear untucked shirts it's not a problem but I wanted to make a tuckable IWB for those rare occasions when I need to tuck in a shirt.

    Thanks for all your encouragement.

Excellent work on the holster!  Great idea on the leather and kydex mix. Let us know how you like it after wearing it for a while - I have been tempted to make one myself but need to buy materials first...

Re: My first attempt at a holster

Nice work Bronson, I haven't had a chance to look at many holsters yet but I have a Fobus P11 for my SKYY and the Bersa fits in it for now. Not as tight as the CPX-1 but it will do for a while until I look around. Not sure I want to tackle one myself yet!! Still have to get one for my SR9 also.

I don't know if I could do that and stay within the PG13 guidelines of BersaTalk.  I used some pretty creative language, and I'm pretty sure that's an integral part of the process... like chanting to call down the gods of holstery Stick out tongue [:P]

That's a really nice looking holster Bronson. It appears the gods answered you. And all this was done without the help of the little voices or contact with the Mothership?
