World Court orders U.S. to halt executions of 5 Mexicans in Texas
Associated Press July 16, 2008
THE HAGUE, Netherlands -- The U.N.'s highest court today ordered the United States to stay the executions of five Mexicans on Texas death row pending review of their cases.
Mexico had appealed to the World Court to block the executions. At hastily convened hearings last month, Mexico argued that the United States is defying a 2004 International Court of Justice order to review the cases of 51 Mexicans sentenced to death by state courts.
That order was based on the Hague-based court's finding that the condemned prisoners had been denied the right to help from their consulate following their arrest.
Today's ruling comes less than three weeks before the first of the death row inmates, Jose Medellin, was scheduled for execution by lethal injection in Texas for taking part in the gang rape and murder of two teenage girls 15 years ago in Houston.
Topics: World Court, TX, Texas, Mexico, Mexicans, illegal aliens, illegal immigration, illegal immigration crimes, murders, death penalty, Americans, vicitims
At last month's hearings, Mexico's chief advocate Juan Manuel Gomez-Robledo told the court the cases had not been systematically reviewed, and the U.S. was "in breach of its international obligations."
John Bellinger III, the U.S. legal adviser, said then that the federal government had gone to "extraordinary lengths" to carry out the World Court's directive and to intercede with the state courts.
Earlier, President Bush issued a directive to the state courts to abide by the decision and also asked Texas specifically to review Medellin's case ahead of his planned Aug. 5 execution.
Those steps were "highly unusual," Bellinger said. "It almost never happens that the federal government enters an appearance in state court proceedings."
However, Texas refused, and in March the U.S. Supreme Court ruled by a 6-3 vote that Bush lacked the authority to compel state courts to comply with the judgment from The Hague.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Attorney General Michael Mukasey have jointly written to Texas Gov. Rick Perry, urging him to review Medellin's case, Bellinger said.
Informally known as the World Court, the tribunal is the U.N.'s judicial arm for resolving disputes among nations. Its decisions are binding and final, but it has no enforcement powers.

We need to get rid of the UN and tell the world to stick it . They did the crime not let them fry. If you killed in Mexico they would.t listen to world court They find a wall and shot you.
Mexico thinks they should be able to interfer in our country at every turm. Then encourage border jumpers and then scream about rights they are arrested . I have really came to disliking that country. Its is time they were put in their place. But King George won't do it he's to buddy buddy with their leader at the expense of America. O banana and Cain will be as bad or worst They all want the NAU and the ruin of America.

We just need to go back to cheaper forms of execution then. It wasn't cruel and unusual back then. Actually I think electrifying someone to death qualifies as unusual don't you think, just snap thier necks and be done with it. Why make things any more complicated than they have to be. Let them have thier time for appeal, when all reasonable mesures have been taken get it over with. Roting in jail has got to be more expensive than that, you've got to feed, and cloth, and house them for how ever much time. Blind fold them and make the desition, shoot or hang, depending on the crime.
Hey, I'm all for due processs, just stop fussing aroung with your gagits. Why pay for expencive poisons and gasses.
If you do not know what your rights are, you do not have them.

RUTGERS95:Agreed! Screw the UN, screw world opinion in AMERICAN MATTERS. They don't like it when we say they do something wrong but the liberal elite here think we should fold to a world court. Never!!!! Fry these guys, fry them now......
Screw the NAU too. Let's stop fussing around with other nations all together, if they have something they want to sell us fine, but we need to stop fight other people's wars. Defend our borders, and give the globalists the finger(pardon my french). We have are own country, and our own courts, and we like it that way. We already have a United States, we don't need to make things any more complicated by uniting North America.
On the other note, if some one wants to come to our contry, they should have to abide by our rules. You don't like our rules stay in your own country, you do the crime, you do the time as they say.
If you do not know what your rights are, you do not have them.

Nope, its the appeals process that cost the most money... lethal injection is cheap compared to lawyers. Honestly, guilty or not, if the judge said your going to die, your going to fight like crazy... Look at the average number of appeals a life sentence inmate normally files as opposed to a death row inmate? (I believe its close to 10 to 1.) Its a big difference, this is why I don't support the death penalty... not because they don't deserve it, but I don't wont to pay for them to waste other peoples time. Let em rot. DD

That is 100% correct. Rotting in jail is cheaper than a death sentence. I too am for the death penalty but I am more for what saves taxpayers money.

That makes perfect sence, I'm right there with you now. We should down grade the contry clubs some of thiese guys are "rotting" in though. I was talking to one of the corections officers in one of the near by counties and they pretty much had free raine of the facility, no wonder we have so many repeat offenders. I'm not saying thier all like that, but prison should be more like punishment and laws should resembly justice more closely, but that's just my little dream world. I don't know where to start on lawers.
