    Spare Magazine

When I purchased my Bersa Thunder Ultra Compact 45 last week it came with a extra magazine in the box. Has Bersa always supplied an extra magazine or is this new?

    Thank you

    Re: Spare Magazine

I have heard on the 9mm they have so I assume that they do also on the 45. Someone will chime in here that has bought one and let you know I am sure. Enjoy that bersa 45, I have heard good things about them. How does it shoot? have you had a chance to try it out yet? let us know.

    Thanks

    Jeff

    Re: Spare Magazine

My understanding is that the larger Bersa firearms, 9mm and higher, have shipped with two magazines since August 2007. Before that, just one.

I bought a BT9UC in Jan. 2007. Only had one mag. Bought a BT45UC in Mar. 2008. Two mags, as I expected.

Old stock from prior to Aug. 2007 will still only have one magazine. But I think you'd be hard pressed to find any old stock.

With the larger Bersas, if you're going to have trouble, it's usually right out of the box. So the fact that yours started out good is a very good sign.

You shouldn't have any trouble with yours unless you do something to cause trouble for yourself, such as shoot steel-cased ammo or a lot of +P or +P+.

    Re: Spare Magazine

I maybe the odd one on this matter but I believe you do not need +P loads with the 45 ACP. My thinking is a 230 grain JHP is a large enough round that even if I do not get full expansion the size of the bullet along is enough to get the job accomplished. I do carry +P loads in my Sub Compact 9mm Glock 26.

    Re: Spare Magazine

I agree with the above except in the case of .45 Hollow Points that are not jacketed. Since HP bullets will expand and slow down upon contact quicker than JHP or FMJ ball ammo I prefer +P rounds in non jacketed HP's to give me a bit of extra penetration, especially in winter when people (read that as potential BG's) wear heavier clothes. OTOH, +P ammo will not hurt the Bersa, but it will give you more of a pounding and I wouldn't recommend it as a steady diet.

As for the earlier question, since last August all Bersa pistols in 9mm or larger come with 2 magazines. Also, the 9mm mags are now 13 rd (UC) or 17 rd (T-9). Earlier 9mm guns imported before '06 came with 10 rd mags to comply with the Clinton AWB that expired in Sept of '04. All the .45 mags hold 7 rds regardless of when they were built. If you find a pistol with only one magazine and they are asking the same price that newer pistols are selling for, I'd ask for a discount since a spare 9mm, 40S&W or 45ACP magazine will cost you between $45-$50. Also, if you see a Bersa 9/45 built in the past 12 months that only has a single magazine, I'd ask where the extra magazine went.
