    ceiling fan install help

hey all, I am installing 3 ceiling fans in my house never done it before. I have cathedral ceilings that are pretty high 16ft+. I am a DIY guy and refuse to pay for something I can figure out soooooo.... I need big fast fans to move a lot of air to save on my heating bill in the winter. I would like to install a couple 60+ inchers in the peak. Do I need to look for high RPM fans? my 'rents have a slow fan at their house that doesnt move any air, and I dont want to repeat that mistake. anyone know what I should be looking for? are fans even rated by speed or air movement or something?

    Will hunt for food

its bow season, my neck has swelled up and I keep kicking up carpet and leaving my scent.

I'm guessing that you probably have an issue with the firing pin.  A little CLP should do the trick.

    Re: ceiling fan install help

First of all, a fast, large fan in the winter will provide wind CHILL, not heat. You need slow and steady air movement upward to push the massed warm air down from the ceiling, but you want the air to come down at the perimeter, not straight down on your head. The idea is to circulate, not create a cold wind. Blade pitch is a good way to determine air movement, not speed. A 16 ft ceiling should have fans dropped to 12 ft or so. If you push pullcold air up from the floor it will circulate the warm air downward at the perimeter..

Most people have their ceiling fans pushing air downward in the summer, but if you are using air conditioning, you want to raise the cool air upward, so once again you should try running the fan to circulate air UPWARD which means it will help pull the cool air up so the overall temp will drop. Again, you will be pushing air upward in the center of the room so that it will circulate downward on the perimeter.

Well I think you should lower you ceiling  Remodel so you ceiling is 7' then you can make that now enclosed space a  gun room and storage room . Be a lot easlier to cool LR and all that wasted space now is useable  for guns and Ammo and food, water , or to hide from wife, kids, police ,

I have my fans to push air up  also but my ceilings are low and I must duck every fan in the house. or feel the wack wack wack of the blades

Hi Poke....I have a tall ceiling in my living room (15')...and a ceiling fan....with 4 speeds + OFF. The "wing span" of the thing is maybe 6'....My LR has two vents in the ceiling not too far from the fan, and because of the slope of the ceiling, the vents are not that much higher than the fan. I have my fan blowing the air down. High speed will freeze a person out, so it is usually on speed #2 or 3....I do not use the fan that much in the winter, but if I turn it on, it is reversed, so it is not blowing the air down...I am able to keep my thermostat 2 to 3 degrees warmer in the summer when the fan on...... FWIW, I also have them installed in three bedrooms, and they are used as described above....ceilings in bedrooms are 8'....

Actually the staples do a pretty good job holding it in place for the most part but it sure does get crinkled up in the back. But nothing I cant press out with a good hot iron.

blowing down in summer, blowing up in winter. Vaulted ceilings here also. cooler, why would you reverse that order? even the fans instructions say that way.

    Re: ceiling fan install help

Don't believe everything you read. When you blow hot air down in an air conditioned room you are raising the temperature at the lower level . When you draw cool air upward from the ac ducts you are making the room cooler. Of course when you blow the air downward you will feel the air, but it will be warm air, not cool. If the room is not air conditioned then circulate the air downward for cooling. As far as the air blowing up in the winter, yes you are avoiding a draft. The problem is that with a cathedral ceiling of 16 feet (I have one too) the volume of heated air is huge at the top, but chilly at floor level. I use my fans to circulate the warm air downward but at a low speeed, not a whirlwind. In our great room I have 2 fans, one circulating up and one circulating down.  It all changes when you go to a 7 foot ceiling in a small room where everything a fan does is magnified.

I have installed Hunter and Litex fans in Lowe's lighting departments for many years as a service rep for both companies, and you are correct, the fan instructions read as you say, but my experience has shown me otherwise.  .
