I've been thinking about this for a little while and I thought I'd ask you guys what you think.  If a problem with cooking comes around is it O.K. to eat small quantaties of uncooked rice.  Will it be digested, and Is it dangerous.  I've heard that throwing rice at wedings is bad because the birds that eat it can die (burst stomach from expantion) .  I was just curious, I wouldn't want to find myself thinking about it latter and not knowing the cons.  Thanks in advance.

Soak it in water until soft, so that it swells before it gets to your stomach.  Otherwise, keep your portions small, because once it's in your stomach, it will swell up and like parched corn, if too much is eaten, the swelling can be very painful.

Yep, birds eat the rice thrown at weddings and stuff themselves with it and then drink.  The rice swelling in their stomachs, causes the stomach to expand until it bursts, causing death.

I thought small quantities would be wise.  I didn't think about soaking, probably would take a bit of time, but better than a burst stomach.

Hey, same situation, but beans.  anybody know of any problems with eating dry beans.  I grabed one and you can crunch it down with a little effort (not the tastiest thing ever).  I'm just thinking, on the go, no time for cooking limited recources and storability.

Yeah but it would be uncooked (since he's talking raw stuff here) and would most likely taste rather fowl.

My understanding is that w/ the birds, their physiology prevents them from expelling gas (from either end), which is why they can pop.  I knew a guy who claimed that if you give a seagull Alka-Seltzer, for example, there would soon be bird guts all over the beach.  I never saw it done, nor have I 'Snopes-ed' it, but there's my .02

(Ahhh, back from vacation for only half a day, already I'm discussing exploding birds, and I have all you to thank.  I love this place.)
