I was wondering what is the best personal defence round that has the most round profile for  my GI 1911? The Manual states that only ball amunition should be used in the GI 1911A1. Also would you use a different ammo for home defence than you would use for personal defence? I don't plan to carry the 1911 but want to keep it loaded for home defence. (Tere are no children here to worrie about).

 Try different HP ammo . See what works  The Power Ball in Corbon would work since its sort of hp ball.  Ive shot HP rom my 1941 real GI 1911  and it worked. Its not the ammo its the bullet profile.

I use the 185+P DPX in all my 1911's    Remington Golden saber  might work. Heck even the 100 round value packof Remington HP at wall mart is  ok Its just not most modren HP design.

My 1911's love 230gr. HydraShok's or Winchester SXT, I prefer SXT over the HS's though but both perform perfect. If your gun is finniky with HP ammo use the Corbon PowrBall.

I have about 1,000 rounds thru my Rock Island 1911 milspec with ZERO malfuntions or jams of any kind, with all kinds of ammo.  Here is a list of some of the ammo I have put through it:

FMJ:  WWB, S&B, CCI Blazer Brass, PMC, CCI Blazer Aluminum Case, American Eagle (no malfunctions but American Eagle was really dirty ammo, gun had more residue than with other ammo and I had black specks all over my hands and forearms).

HP:   Federal HydraShok, Speer GoldDot, PMC 185

Federal EFMJ (expanding full metal jacket).  It's sort of like a hollow point, but has a rubber plug to give it a FMJ profile.  Have never used it personally, so can't give a 1st-hand recommendation, but that would be my first test candidate for use in a vintage style 1911 that wasn't designed/tuned for hollow points.

I have always used golden sabers in 1911's they are the closest you get to round nose, and I like 25 in a box, fills 3 mags and a chamber.

     The whole idea of using a 45 is that it's already 45 in the first place. You can get about as much horsepower in a smaller caliber but they need to expand to become 45's. Besides if you ever had to use it the inevitable lawsuit is very likely to go against you if you're using any type of dumdum bullets but much more likely to go your way with Nato-approved full metal jacket. Something to think about. Besides ball ammunition is the most likely of any to function reliably if the byproduct hits the fan.

     Remember nothing makes 45 get smaller!!

Don't know about yours, but my AO takes to Silvertips just like FMJ.  Really don't know how they'll perform or open up but wouldn't getting hit with anything that heavy do a STOP THE PARADE I WANT TO GET OFF movement?

I havn't used this ammo either, but because of it's configuration, you might want to check it out.  Muzzle velocity is 1140fps with 476ft# of energy and it's allowed by agencies that do not allow HP ammunition to be carried by their personnel.

Expansion tests of Federal EFMJ look impressive, maybe MT has something to add

I've feed it all though my G.I lots of walmart white box even.  Never ever had a problem. I like corbon and golden saber cause i seem to get a close pattern but they get expensive. When using a 45 cal I really dont worry about hollow points I go for penetration the wad is aready big enough in my book.
