First Range Report. New Bersa Thunder UC 45

WOW, I must have one of the good ones that will not need much break in. Just finished putting 115 rounds through my new pistol and no matter what I tried I could not get it to malfunction. Rapid fire, slow fire, double tap, even tried a few rounds with a weak grip, and scary accurate. Ammo was 100 rounds of 230 grain FMJ Wal Mart white box, plus 15 rounds of Federal 230 Hydra-Shok. No trouble with the slide or slide release.

Not sure if this means any thing but when I field stripped my weapon for its initial cleaning I noticed that the guide rod recoil spring has an additional spring interwoven with the spring that is attached to the rod pin. Do you know if that is standard or did the factory add an additional spring for any ejection or slide problems they may have been having?

I think the double spring is standard on both the 45UC and the 9UC. However, my old Thunder 9 only has one spring, so maybe the double spring is a relatively new adjustment. When I check the Eagle Imports parts list of parts that are available for the Thunder 9 it refers to a recoil spring "set", so maybe they have a 2 spring set now, too.

Congrats on the .45uc FJR. Mine is my fav gun! It was test fired back in 2004 so its been around a few and it came with the double spring. Good luck and enjoy..

Congrats FJR. I guess next time I consider 9mm or 0.45 I should seriously look in to the Bersa. I will at least take a look at it in the store next time.

Bigblock57,  Take a look at this target I shot 2 days ago.  This is one of the best recoil, ease of getting back on target pistols I have ever shot.  AND I have shot a LOT of pistols over the years.

Not bad for a 55 year old guy that is still recovering from 2 recent stints in the hospital, huh?  But, I really give all the credit to the Bersa Mini FireStorm .45   They did an excellent job on the design of this pistol and it is small enough to use as a Undercover Carry any day.  I have a Houston holster for it.

This is just to give you an idea that even though it's not the price of the Kimbers, Glocks, Sigs, it is surprisingly gifted in reliability and accuracy.  The whole idea of a pistol is to take a round and get it off and the more accurate the better.  Reliability.  All else is preference.

Very very nice. When I will be ready for my next one, Bmini45 must be high on the list. In the meanwhile I'll check it in the store to feel it. Now hold on. 55 years old and you make it sound old? I am too close to that age myself to let it go just like that. And get the docs off your back. This will make you younger instantly.

What was the recoil like on the .45 UC?   I had a 9mm UC and it was tolerable.

I've found the recoil on the 45UC very tolerable also. Not much more than the 9UC.

    +1

The recoil is very easy to manage. The UC-9's is more of a snap upward while the UC-45's recoil is more of a push back towards the shooter. The 9mm (for whatever reason) also cycles faster than the 45 which can seem odd if you shoot both guns and may take a bit of getting use to.

One more thing. A lot of people wonder why the UC-9/45's have dual recoil springs compared to full size models. The reason is barrel length. The UC's have shorter barrels so there is less distance for the slide to travel during recoil, thus they need a stiffer recoil spring to prevent damage to the slide and frame by the recoil. Bersa and many other gun makers now use two springs vs. a single spring (from what I was told by some gunsmiths) mainly for ease of assembly. A single recoil spring on shorter barreled, higher power pistols is often so stiff that it is difficult to remove/reassemble. With two recoil springs, the individual springs don't need to be so tight, making them easier to install or remove for cleaning and replacement. Lower power pistols - like the T-380's - can get by with a single recoil spring on smaller guns because they don't generate the same force as a similar size 9/40/45 pistol.

I shot jarhead79's UC45 the other day, what a creampuff. My 87 year old grandma could handle it.
