SURVEY: Reliable Ammo Brands for Firestorm FS22

Just got a FS22 and ran some various brands of ammo thru it.

    Here's my experience:

American Eagle No [N] No [N]

    Federal Bulk No [N]

Remington Golden Bullet Bulk Pack Yes [Y]

Aqulia Hyper Velocity Yes [Y] Yes [Y]

Remington 22 SubSonic Confused [*-)] (didn't shoot enough to reliably determine, worked well on the few shells I shot)

What are your experiences with these and other brands in this gun ???????

Federal Bulk is jam city. It's good for practicing clearance drills. Believe me, you'll get a lot of practice. Sad [:(] No [N]

Remington Golden Bullets 550 Bonus Pack, much better. Only a few duds per pack. Smile [:)]

CCI Mini-Mags. The best I've tried. Never had a problem with this stuff.  Smile [:)]  But it's way more expensive than the Remington Bonus Pack. Sad [:(]

Remington Bonus Pack is my range fodder of choice. Yes [Y]

Now, if I was going to carry my Firestorm 22lr for SD, (and I don't plan to) I'd carry it with CCI Mini-Mags. Yes [Y]

Re: SURVEY: Reliable Ammo Brands for Firestorm FS22

I use Remington Thunderbolt 40 grain .22lr for most plinking......I've had a few duds, maybe 1 in 50....

p-t....+1 on the CCI Mini-Mags....I've never had a problem with them what so ever, but for what they cost, I shouldn't.....Wink [;)]..

CCI Velocitor for the good stuff.  Federal for plinking.

It's not a target gun so shoot what it likes. If you want the lowdown on rimfire ammo got to: http://rimfirecentral.com/

Re: SURVEY: Reliable Ammo Brands for Firestorm FS22

Here is a warning found on Firestorms web site in regard to the FS22:

"PLEASE ONLY USE HIGH VELOCITY AMMO"

Ok so what exactly is the definition of "HIGH VELOCITY AMMO"

Re: SURVEY: Reliable Ammo Brands for Firestorm FS22

Right on, they are correct!  Use any in the 1250 fps range (standard velocity) that's what they are referring to as "high velocity", and you will be alright. Sub-sonics 1050 fps are for target shooting type firearms. Example the high quality "WOLF match target" (subsonic) type round is not a good choice for your FS22. When you get into the super velocity ammo like 1400+ fps. you will see the accuracy fall off quite a lot. So stay in the 1250 fps range.

It all boils down to the energy required to cycle the slide.

Gee, the Federal Bulk ammo box says "high velocity" and lists a speed of 1260fps and they don't work worth a d**n. FTF/FTE just about every 4-5 rounds. Go figure.Huh? [:^)]

This forum and the rimfire forums all say that about Federal Bulk. Must be a problem child of Federal.

Re: SURVEY: Reliable Ammo Brands for Firestorm FS22

i've put 500 rounds of remington gold bulk pack from wally world through mine in one day with no cleaning.  -flawless function.  only failures were typical of .22: a few bad primers that didn't go off.

-federal bulk pack jams awfullly in my fs22, atleast half the rounds attempted required clearing the action.

-IMHO, stay away from thunderbolt ammo even though i believe it is true high velocity & may cycle your semi-auto-its such ridiculously dirty ammo i'll only put it through a revolver.  that stuff even smells different then anything else!  someone i know who cleans their guns meticulously gummed up the bull barrel of their stainless ruger target pistol so bad after a several hundred round session that it took him 3 hrs to get the barrel clean-he said the brush would hardly go through the barrel.  there is other inexpensive ammo out there that is much cleaner.

Re: SURVEY: Reliable Ammo Brands for Firestorm FS22

shot my fs-22 yesterday-put a whole box of remington golden bullets bulk pack (was there a long time) almost perfect-had 3 ftf's (maybe cause i didnt clean it after the last session, just oiled the slide before i left yesterday), not bad for 1100 rounds.  i tried some bulk winchester .22 ammo in the white box & it turned my fs-22 into a single-shot, bolt action, i don't think the slide even moved at all. 2 magazines trying that & it was back to the remington ammo.  Winchester white box .22 must be weaker then even the bulk federal.  the reliability of these pistols is great-seems better then even the ruger rimfire pistols for reliability.  without any cleaning during the session it still hits steel plates at 75 feet easily.

ques.:  why does the accuracy fall off with a faster bullet.... seems like it would be just the opposite.  I just got a 22 and went back to see what the you guys were reccomending.

Most hyper velocity .22 lr ammo is made for just that, speed. The priming in the rim  is not as consistent as a target grade subsonic.  The bullets aren't as symmetrical and the thin copper coating is no way a contender for a well lubed lead subsonic.

My advice is to buy a  box of different speed and brands and do a test run.  Again all pistols and rifles are different and what they like to be fed.  Just like the Firestorm .22lr needs a little more to cycle it's action. That's why they call for high velocity.

I'm still waiting for the 60 grain test to see if it will cycle in the firestorm.

If you mean Aguila SSS, it should. It cycles my P22 (3.4" barrel), another fussy gun, and my Marlin 60 just fine. Even though it's subsonic, I think the extra mass of the 60 gr bullet holds the gasses back enough that sufficient pressure is generated to cycle the action. Here's Brassfetcher's gelatin test of the Aguila SSS: http://www.brassfetcher.com/Aguila%20Sniper%20SubSonic%2060%20grain%20lead%20round%20nose.html

The round in that test were fired from a 10/22. He also tested it from a P22 here: http://www.brassfetcher.com/WaltherP22test.html
