Removing slide AND getting it back on again

I just purchased a Bersa Duo-Tone .380 today.  shot with it fine after getting out the oil.  Then, this evening, I removed the slide and spring per the instructions to clean out the rest of the excess oil.  Evern removed the grip panels.  Getting it back on again was a bear.  I did get it on and things did not seem right.  The triger did not want to return to the forward postion, unless helped.  Something was amiss, so I took the slide back off.  I noticed that there is a little push up piece from the magazine department.  I put in a magazine, and put the side grips back on, and voila, I got the slide back on.

Is it that I need to keep the magazine installed when I remove  the slide?  After last assembly, I tried out the slide and trigger, dry firing, with no rounds.  Looked good, so I went out and shot a few rounds though it and fed and operated ok.  Just a strange encounter getting the slide back on.

Does this give other a fit as well?

No, when you had the grips off you allowed the magazine safety to drop behind the disconnector. Just pushing up on it will put it back into place. You can do that with your finger or using a magazine. Just call it a learning experience. Let us know if we can be of further help.

When reassembled right the firearm should not fire without the magazine in place then?

The trigger should swing free and not engage with the mag out.  There is a lot of info. on the correct way to take down and reassemble the Thunder on this forum. Really worth reading and will save you a lot of grief.

Remove the mag and the pistol is harmless Even with a round in chamber The trigger won't work.  This is considered by some a safety device.  I have always considered a waste .  S&W uses it Browing hipower did and  most hi power clones Others do to.  More a Euorpe thing than American.
