Lets see I think the word is profit  , more money to be made  in the others .

Yep I agree with micheal t as there probably is not much of a profit margin compared to other manufactors.

Miami/ Fort Lauderdale/ West Palm Beach.... That's the problem! If I need to say more; then you're brainwashed! Big Al's in Hallandale had a duo tone for $110 more than here in WNC. Try guns america or something.

Re: HELP! - Why all the Bersa trashing from gun stores?

Only one local gun shop carries them regularily but they charge up to $100 more than list, on just about everything.  Other than that, for the 4 or 5 stores I have been to around here, most say they are underrated.  The only exception is a clerk that likes one particular brand over everything.

Re: HELP! - Why all the Bersa trashing from gun stores?

If it wasn't for my LGS I wouldn't even know about Bersa. I went in to buy an LCP, but they didn't have any in stock. I was looking for a .380 for summer carry and the owner suggested a Sig 239. It felt OK, but at $600, not what I had in mind.

Then his partner suggested the Bersa...said it was a great gun and a good value. I handled it & then went home & did some research...that's when I came across this forum.

I went back the next day & bought the 380cc. Three weeks later, picked up the T9 Hi-Cap from the same LGS. I really like both of them. After about 150 rounds of break in on the 380, it has been flawless at the range. It has become my constant companion this summer.

The T9...never a hiccup. Both are VERY ACCURATE. After I pay off the AR I have on lay away, I see a stainless 45UC in my future...but, I know it won't stop there.

Re: HELP! - Why all the Bersa trashing from gun stores?

I ran into this at a few gun stores in my area. I talked to one of the owners that was willing to listen. I told him that there are a lot of newbies that are interested in shooting sports but don't want to layout $600 - $700 not knowing if they'll like shooting or not.  I bought my first Bersa because of the price and features.
    Now i'm hooked .
The shop owner took my advice and started stocking Bersas. guess what?  He started selling 2 bersa to every one Glock,Beretta,etc.. Now he can't keep them in stock.

Re: HELP! - Why all the Bersa trashing from gun stores?

I knew I wanted to trade in my Ruger SP101 for a smaller concealed size handgun (.380). I went to the local shop I purchased the 357 from, Bradis Guns (Indianapolis). I told them my needs and they suggested the Bersa Thunder .380. Me, thinking I am smarter than them, went with a Walther PPK (used for $349). Took it to the range and test fired. I had multiple mis-feeds and the magazine kept falling out, not to mention the bite and kick it had. Email to Walther, said it was a faulty mag. catch. I took it back and they swapped it for the Bersa Thunder .380(New for $269). I took it to the range and it shoots beautifully. It is very balanced and accurate. Because of this experience, my next purchase is the Bersa Thunder 9. From my experience, the local gun shop here was very complimentary of Bersa and sells to you based on your need and not on profit.

Re: HELP! - Why all the Bersa trashing from gun stores?

The guys at my LGS don't bash Bersa's, but actually have begun carrying more of them. Although I don't think I've ever heard them recommend them, I have had them tell customers they haven't had a single one returned by an unhappy customer. To me that says a lot.

Re: HELP! - Why all the Bersa trashing from gun stores?

We have 5 local gun shops and a Academy and Ganders Mountain.  The largest lgs is about 25,000 sq. ft. with approx $3 million in gun and accessory inventory and usually 5 employees and a full range of firearms from economy priced to major money.  All are priced at retail plus, specially on ammo, and the owner will haggle some.  My favorite lgs has 1,800 sq. ft. and carries the value firearms with the springfields being his more expensive handgun line, except for a few S & W snubbies, and then a very good line of C & R rifles, ARs , AKs and Saigas.  His pricing is always more than fair on new and used, and ammo too, and I don't even try to haggle with him.  He is a great Bersa and Firestorm Dealer.  I know that he and one employee sell as many guns as the big shop, smaller gross profits, but I wouldn't be suprised if his net was close to as much as the big gun shop and I feel like he sleeps better at night just having about $250,000 in inventory with no money borrowed.  There are always four to six regulars in the shop any time I go in, good companions, good customers, good humor, no Bersa or Taurus bashing.   Doesn't carry Bglocks, occasionally has free pizza, all Hitlary and Osabama truth tellers. Truly the nearly perfect LGS.

Re: HELP! - Why all the Bersa trashing from gun stores?

I'm new to this group and I agree most shop owners try to steer you towards what they can not sell or what they will make a better profit on.  Before I purchase anything, I really enjoy reading what others have to say and then I go from there and make my own choice.  Long story short, my first Bersa was a Thunder 9 Ultra Compact and my only complaint was that it came with two ten round mags.  I later purchased a Bersa Firestorm Mini 45 ACP, also made in Argentina and must admit, I am a happy camper. Smile [:)] Both are great at 15 meters with nice shot groups and after about 300 rds each, I have not had one failure at all. Just a side note, I also went against my dealers advice when I purchased my first 9mm. I picked up a Taurus PT92 AF instead of a Beretta. It proved to also be a better value, a fantastic shooter with 17 rd mags and never a problem.

    Hi,
We recommend Bersas at our shop. It is one of our main lines and best sellers. Lifetime warranty and there is a Gander Mountain within 20miles if they ever need service (which is rare). We try to keep every model in stock from Firestorm 22 to UC 45 with factory mags for each. They are great low priced pistols, in fact between my girlfirnd and I we own three. They are sometimes a pain to get, but all my distributors know to call me whenever they get any in stock. Feel free to email or call me if you have any questions on them. We're having a sale right now on the 380 PLUS.

It's very nice to hear from a dealer that you promote the Bersa line, but if I were a dealer I don't think I would be recommending Gander Mtn. for service. It may come back to haunt you as their Bersa warranty service has repeatedly been shown to lack, very badly. They are the last place I would ever send a Bersa for service.

You know MT you are so right. I've been trolling and have seen CGW posts and how helpful they are here. Thanks for pointing that out. I will contact them for details on proceedures if any of our Bersa folks need any work. Thanks!!!!

Re: HELP! - Why all the Bersa trashing from gun stores?

Hello.  I reckon I missed this thread before and just read through it a moment ago.

I would assume that some dealers may indeed talk down anything that they happen not to be selling at the moment, while others may believe that unless the gunmaker's name is household common, the firearm must be second-rate, have "bad metal" or whatever.

I might offer an opinion at this point and it is only that as I cannot back it up with any hard, cold facts:

I believe that the Bersa Thunder 380 remains a "best buy" in midsize 380 autopistols.

I can vouch  for the following:

I lost my ammo consumption notes on my sole Thunder 380, but it's digested something like 3000 rounds, most was factory 95-gr. FMJ as well as various maker's JHP's.  I do not recall how many rounds I fired at each range session but would guess not more than 150 before finishing up or moving to another firearm.  In any event, I never did fire round after round and box after box of ammunition to see how dirty the little gun would have to get before it began to get sluggish or malfunction; I'm not too concerned, either.  The little gun's run fine for me each and every time I've shot it.  My total number of malfunction is exactly zero.

I cannot intelligently comment on the scientific aspects of the pistol's metallurgy or construction and mine may be about to self-destruct on the very next shot...but somehow I doubt it.

As I've said many times, I may not be devotee of the 380 ACP round, but I am a fan of several of the pistols chambered for it.  That said, I have two friends still in law enforcement who have close-and-personal experiences with 380 pistols.  One was shot through the chest and arm (bullet entered at an angle) with FMJ.  Luckily nothing of importance and no bone was hit.  He returned fire but missed before his legs "turned to jelly" and he fell.  He recovered fully and remains one of the most lucky men I've ever known.

Not the most expensive to be sure, this Bersa Thunder 380 auto remains a favorite of mine for BUG use on rare occassions.  Most of the time, it is shot for fun at the range.  I simply enjoy shooting it and these days I rate "fun" as a high-priority item.

The other was forced to shoot a felon trying to him him.  The felon got off 4 quick but inaccurate shots with a Bersa Thunder before my buddy was able to solve the matter with two .223 rounds to the felon's head. (He told me that he still "liked" my Thunder 380 and that it is never a gun's fault that it's misused by criminals.  Like all of my friends, he fully supports the Second Amendment and likes the honest citizen to be armed, but that's another topic...)  While I've seen the 380 round come up a little short on penetration in some instances, in others it has done more than I ever expected.  For example, it decked a full-grown drunk male when a 95-gr. FMJ broke his femur!  I do not recall which leg or the brand of ammunition.

I know of a couple of other folks shooting Bersa Thunders and while neither shoots cases of ammo through their pistols, they do shoot them frequently and continue to report on the pistols in glowing terms.  A man and wife recently qualified in a CHL course I taught using their Bersa 380's.  Neither had any malfunctions and I do not recall seeing any with the several Bersa Thunder's I've seen come through the Texas Concealed Handgun Qualifications that I've had a part in for well over a decade.

Though I seldom carry them, I do own several 380-caliber pistols.  While I like each for some specific reason, the one I find myself toting most often when carrying an extra gun for some reason is my Bersa 380 Thunder.

I do voice one complaint, however: Why in the world didn't I go back and get another one (or two; I operate on the "pair and a spare" approach to firearms I like when possible) when I had the chance? (While I've not seen or read of any problems with the gun's lock system, I prefer my firearms without.)

I have heard of a couple of officers with newer Bersa's having feeding problems but I know no more than that.  I suspect that the magazines are probably the root of the problem. Other current owners I've seen report no problems.

    Best and good shooting.
