I just received my permit to carry a couple of weeks ago and am still getting used to a comfortable method of carry and public areas I may have trouble with. I am assuming the paranoia of carrying in public will deminish in a short time.

Has anyone had an issue with their gun setting of a theft deterent (metal detector) at door of a store? If so how is it typically handled? I do not want to be in a situation where I have to reveal my gun, and I am certainly not going to hand my gun over to anyone while I go through the detector to make sure it is the gun and not some stolen item in my pocket.

I am thinking that if it was an issue that it would have been talked about on this forum before but I wasn't able to find an earlier post.

I've never heard of a gun doing it. I'm not saying it couldn't happen. They usually set them up to react to merchandise, not metal.

No, I'm not going to allow someone to hold my firearm while they search me, either.

Gun doesn't do it. If happens, you have one of those tags on your body . You may not even know it  could be something you bought a long time befor. Think if metal did belt buckles, metal canes wheelchairs and  lots of pocket change  would do it to. Heck pocket knives would trip also .

Theft deterrant devices are not metal detectors...
They read "tags": those little white plastic rectangular
stick-on thingys found in merchandise packaging.
Never had a problem with large frame autos.
One guy on a Forum was swearing up and down that his weapon was setting the alarms off.
Finally located the "tag" in his new wallet.

I have nevere heard of a gun setting off the theft alarms, however I know they will activate if one of those pesky theft control tags gets stuck to the bottom of your shoe......

Shopping carts would probably set them off too if they went off from metal. I can see where he gets the idea though since they do resemble the airport metal detectors in a way.

The system in stores in an RFID sensor designed to work with certain tags (in theory only the tags programmed for that store).  Pistol will not set these off, only a properly coded tag will do that.

Towguy. Get over the paranoya. You are doing nothing wrong when you carry. Be proud and carry away. And if you ever set up one of those devices, just show them the reciept and walk away.

Have never had that happen, even at Wally World (Wal*Mart)  Those sensors are usually triggered by an RFID tag (Radio Frequency Identification) tag embedded in the merchandise.  This is why you will notice them rubbing certain items over a large flat area at the register.  It turns off the RFID transmission and makes it so it won't trigger the alarm.  Then, if someone forgets to do that, and it does trigger the alarm, you will notice they can run a wand over your merchandise to see which item is triggering it.  They look at your receipt, and if that item is on the receipt, they know you paid for it, and that the clerk either forgot to neutralize it, or the process failed for some reason.

RFID is also that neat little thing they can embed in your pet's neck, by the way, so that your pet can be identified easily.
