In two weeks I'm taking my family to Washington, DC.  We are very excited about the trip but I just have one problem - DC gun laws.  We are driving from Kentucky and will also be staying over one night in West Virginia.  I know that I can't have my CCW gun in DC but what burns me is that I have to leave it at home for the entire trip because of the destination.  I hate driving that distance over all those miles where my CCW is recognised and I can't even have the gun in the car because of the fact that we end up in DC.  What's a guy to do?

Washington D.C. is a very dangerous place, why the cops does'nt demand that everyone be armed is a disservice to the public. But then again, there is alot of disservice to the public in D.C. Personally I have travelled the world a couple of times and the only place that I've been MUGGED was, you guessed it!, our nations capitol. 

Park you car at the Motel. Take cab were your going. DC tourist area safe.  out of main tourist area no so good. Cab safe and their reasonable as far as a cab goes.  Don't wander around at night . I was their  for 3 days  about 2 weeks after 911  . I visted a few sights and my WWII and I remembered our service at the Wall and a few other places. Couldn't get in to many places as they were still recovering from the attack.

DON'T TAKE A GUN TO DC  THEIR JAILS ARE WORST IN COUNTRY.

I don't get it.  Is your hotel/place you're staying IN the District? That is the only reason I can imagine you would have to leave it home. Even flying in is fine, both Dulles and Ronald Reagan are in Virginia.
I usually stay in the Arlington area or out in Annapolis (I just like Annapolis) when I am in the area. Just leave it at the hotel for day trips in..

i would do what parrothead said take your gun. stay at hotel in the suburbs of md or va when you go to dc leave your gun at the hotel. thats what i would do if i ever go to dc

Best bet is to find a motel in VA, and then take the train to D.C. Use the room safe in the motel room for your valuables and carry a knife.

Specs

Kimber and a Swiss firm has just come out with the COOLEST pepper spray system I've ever seen.  It shoots two shots of pepper spray and foam approx 15ft.  It has a trigger and is about the size of a wallet.  I got it for the wife but now have one for myself and various family members.  I cant remember the %, but its in the 10-12% range of potency.  Beside a blade, this might be a great thing to have in DC.  The gun shop that sold it to me said that every cop in town is buying this stuff for their families.  I can't think of a better endorsment than that.

Because we are taking children we are staying in a hotel in DC.  We figured that would be the easiest for the kids to enjoy.  When we need a break we can just walk back to the hotel.  Looks like I'll just be leaving the gun at home this trip.

Hi mike...you can stay in VA (ie...Fairfax or Alexandria), and if you felt comfortable with it, some hotel room have a safes in the room....Public transportation is very abundant.......
