    How old?

I have been thinking lately about something and wondered if asking two questions would point out a trend to support my theory.  Of course I'll start with the questions and add the theory later.  (o:

How old were you when you first handled a firearm?

Were you raised in a rural or urban area?

    Kimi

My answers are 10 and rural.

    Re: How old?

First time handling a firearm?  That would have been at the ripe old age of 5.  Sitting on my father's lap with a .22 rifle propped up on the side rail of a boat, shooting at bottles that they (my father and his buddy) tossed overboard.

I was raised mostly in the suburbs, although we spent plenty of time taking excursions out in the "sticks" hunting and fishing.  So, while I was a suburbanite, I still got lots of rural exposure.

    Re: How old?

Been shootin for as long as I can remember. Rifles at first then moved to hand guns when I was a young adult. Lately I've been having a lot of fun with my rubber ban gun at work. (crew hates it) Not sure what I'll b shooten when I finally grow up.

Grew up in the burbs but would shoot at my uncles farm.

    Re: How old?

    BB gun - 9
    Rifle (.22) - 10
    Shotgun - 12
    Handgun - 18

I grew up in Charlotte, NC's 'burbs during the 50's & 60's... semi rural at the time. There were homes on three sides of ours, but if you crossed the street in front of our house (my 82 y/o mother still lives in it BTW) there was a 150 acre farm, so there was plenty of quality outdoor time. Sadly - at least for me - that farm is now condos, a strip mall and a park/playground while the 2 lane road in front of the house is now a 6 lane highway.

    Re: How old?

Air pellet pistol – about 7 yrs old

.22 Rifle – about 11 (good ol’ summer camp)

Shotgun – 14 (part of a mini-course in school, of all places)

    Handgun – about 20

Grew up in pretty rural Connecticut (although that part has been a suburb of NYC for over 20 yrs now)

    Re: How old?

I remember hunting ducks with my dad at age 4, elk at age 5. Of course, I didn't get to shoot, I was just an extra set of eyeballs. In the movie Christmas Story, the scene where Ralphie got his Daisy Red Ryder bb gun for Christmas, that was me to a tee at age 9 or so. I slept with it for weeks. I can't actually remember the first time I shot a .22, but it was under 10. Hunted pheasants at age 12 in the wheatfields of eastern Oregon and deer at 16 in the scrub oak and pinions of central Utah. I grew up in small towns where the countryside was never far away.

    Re: How old?

Lived in the suburbs (way out in the burbs I'll admit - lot's of woods to play in), so depended on vacations and summer camp to shoot. First experiences would be:

    bb/pellet guns @ 8 or 9 (OH)
.22 rifle @ 11 (Boy Scout summer camp) (OH)
    410 shotgun also at camp
9mm and 45cal handguns @14 with grandfather's neighbor (VA). Shooting with him at stuff in the junkyard was pretty cool.

Never shot with my father, though. He had a 22 revolver in the house or under the seat in the car during vacation trips all my life, and he never once fired it. He passed away the week before Christmas 2007 and it is still (unfired) in the box in mom's closet.

Took my son out to initiate him into the wonderful world of firearms (22 rifle & Walther P22) last year when he turned 10. And I still live in the 'burbs.

Okay.  From 4th grade through HS graduation, we lived on  a 3-acre farm surrounded by larger farms about 5 miles out of a 45,000 person town in SW Washington.  I think I got my Daisy BB rifle in 4th grade, but like all boys of my generation, I had cap gun 6-shooters since I was about 5.

I was allowed to use my Dad's .22 bolt action around the time I turned 12.  The high point of my .22 shooting was a couple of years later when I was allowed to kill a calf for slaughter - dropped it with a single shot to the forehead at about 5 yards.

At 18 (in 1965), I joined the Army Reserve where I fired my first high-powered rifle (a M-1) and qualified Expert with it - later, in AIT, I was Expert with the M-14 (semi- and full-auto), M-30 machine gun, etc., but only made Sharpshooter with the .45 pistol.

No contact with firearms between 1971 (when I was 24) and last month (I'm now 61).
