    Chlorinated Ester?

Under the post "lot of cleaners to chose from" Bullwinkle gave an article that mentioned chlorinated ester and that it can be extreamly damaging to metal.   http://www.grantcunningham.com/lubricants101.html

What do you guys know about this additive.  Is it very common.  and if it truely is as harmfull as the author claims, what products do you guys know that contains this junk so that we can all avoid it like the plague.  Every one wants a smooth working gun, but we don't want it to fall apart on us because of the grease we are useing.

The author writes that it is common in "miracle lubes".  I am useing a product called slide glide specificaly, great stuff, smooths out the action of the slide and stays put.  Real "miracle lube" potential hear, but there is the problem.  Does it contain the evil chlorinated esters.  Thanks guys, I was just thinking this could be a watch out post for others ........ if this additive is really as bad or as common as I am led to believe by the author of this article.

    Re: Chlorinated Ester?

I love Molybdenum disulfide, but be careful it does migrate as he stated. Great for triggers.

In the write up he talks about ATF, I do use it on certain parts.

Take some Brownell's best light gun oil and put a drop on some paper note the red color.  Now take some ATF and do the same note the red color.

Check the smell and viscosity. Watch  how both penetrate 20 lb white paper exactly the same.

Put a drop of each on on a slide of one of your guns. One on the left and one on the right rub in just a little. Inspect both sides 24 hours later. Both will match in every dimension.

2oz of Brownell's $3.99    2 oz of ATF .43 cents.  I'm not saying Brownell's is botteling ATF, but all signs point to just that.

    RC

PS: Don't confuse with Brownells "Friction Defense Gun Oil" here they have added both Teflon and moly the the oil.... (ATF) making it a top end lube.

Um, who is Ester, and why did you chlorinate her? Confused [*-)]

Okay, I had to read the article, twice, but I found her. Smile [:)] I had no idea there was such a thing.

Thats what I was thinking.  If this guy actually knows what he's talking about, it's a little scary to think you cound potentially be useing a product that can damage your gun like that.  Anybody else have any insight here.

Chlorinated solvents are bad for you...not just your gun. They make very good degreasers, but there are much safer alternatives. I'd rather substitute a little mechanical action to replace the solvency, than take a chance on a third ear lobe.

    Re: Chlorinated Ester?

Esther Williams. She is well chlorinated.

Chlorinated solvents can cause embrittlement issues with titanium given enough time. We always used the non-chlorinated Brakleen (green can) on the clutch cans for that reason. In cleaning your guns it is unlikely you could ever use enough to cause any damage to either the metal in your guns or yourself. Plastic polymers are another story completely. Be careful what you use on your plastic fantastics.
