So, I want to replace the hammer in my gf's 905 with a bobbed hammer but Taurus won't sell me one. They say it's a restricted part, they say they won't sell them to gunsmiths either. They also won't replace it for me if I send it in because it isn't broken and they don't do "custom work".
I could try bobbing the one she already has but if I mess it up then I'm SOL. I can't find a hammer online for the 905 but did find one for the 605. So I'm wondering if a 605 hammer will work in the 905?
I appreciate any thoughts you all may have.

Re: Taurus model 905 hammer?
I have had 3 Taurus and only one was a working pistol. The customer service sucks as you have found out So help her find a better pistol.
A S&W airweight shooting 38+P is just as good as that 9mm and no moon clips to mess with,
Or Bob hammer your self. Now bobing hammer is no big deal But that could lighten to much and cause lite primer strikes.

How hard is it to change out the hammer on the 905? Is her 905 stainless or blued?

Re: Taurus model 905 hammer?
I would suspect (not certain) that the hammer from an M605 would work. Also, if you are afraid to try it yourself, a gunsmith would probably not charge a lot to bob the hammer.
Michael T: My wife has had a Taurus M605 for several years, and has never had any trouble with it. On May 1, this year, I bought her a S&W 637 Airweight. Two trips to the range and she said get rid of it. Didn't like the recoil, didn't like the trigger. So I traded it for a Kahr P9 which will be mine and she is taking over my Kahr CW9 which she likes. But, she wants to keep her Taurus. Interestingly, the S&W and the Kahr weigh about the same, but recoil was much more objectionable on the S&W (I assume that the semi-auto action absorbs more).

Hello, Are you saying your wife doesn't 'mind' the recoil of a 2 in. snubby in 357 magnum (M605)?? but doesn't 'like' the recoil of a 2in snub in 38 spl??? Thansk

Re: Taurus model 905 hammer?
Hey Woodie,
Let her shoot some wad cutters through her .38 Will make a big differance and as a SD round a wad cutter is BAD A$$. Now if she just dosnt like the gun then none of this matters anyway.

Not an option.

Tried it and for whatever reason she hated it so, again, not an option. She actually likes the moon clips quite a bit.
michael t:Or Bob hammer your self.
That was my plan but I wanted a different hammer to bob so we could still have the original to put back in if she wanted.
michael t: But that could lighten to much and cause lite primer strikes.
Hadn't thought of that but I know they used to sell the 905 with a bobbed hammer so I'm thinking it would probably be ok.

It's pretty easy to get the hammer assembly out. Once the side plate is off and the tension on the hammer spring is released the whole assembly just lifts out.
Hers is stainless.

Re: Taurus model 905 hammer?
Well, I ordered a 605 stainless hammer assembly from Numrich. Their customer service people were very friendly and helpful. They also told me that if it doesn't fit I can return it as long as it's not altered.
So, well see....

We are talking .38 spl in both guns. There is a significant weight difference between the S&W (13 oz.) and the Taurus (24 oz). She has fired .357 from the Taurus. While she did not find it to be "fun", it was not as punishing as the S&W which left blisters on her hand.

Re: Taurus model 905 hammer?
The 605 hammer showed up the other day. I was a little worried because it has some minor differences but all the important stuff is in the same place It dropped right in and the pistol works just fine in dry fire (haven't had a chance to shoot it yet). If it functions well I'll be taking it back out to bob the hammer and take off the SA notch. I also had to put the original hammer spring back in as the reduced power one I got from Wolff was giving light primer strikes in DA. The reduced power trigger return spring worked great though and has reduced the trigger pull to a reasonable level that my gf can pull in DA.
I'll keep ya posted ![Smile [:)]](/emoticons/emotion-1.gif)
