Child, 4, Shoots Self at Sam's Club With Grandma's Gun

Police Department spokesman Brick Lewis said the child took the gun from her grandmother's purse Monday and shot herself in the chest.

He said the child's grandmother has a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon. She has not been charged with a crime.

Lewis said the child was rushed to a local hospital and was recovering after undergoing emergency surgery. Hospital officials wouldn't release her condition.

The store was closed while police investigated the shooting. It reopened Monday afternoon.

+1 pt....The same thing happened here a couple of years ago, also in the Sam's PL...A twelve year old girl removed gun from mother's purse and was playing with it and shot herself in the leg...Here (in TX), it a crime to make a firearm accessible to a juvenile and the parents were charged. CHL goes bye-bye......

Purse carry might be convenient for some people, but I just don't think it is a responsible way to carry.

This happened in Columbia, SC about an hour south of me.  It has been all over the news, but no real details.  Sam's Club has stated they will change their rules on weapons.

It seems Granny was careless, and child had not been taught any firearm safety.  I have already started with my 3 year old daughter.  She helps clean my pistols.  She doesn't shoot yet, but understands guns and bullets are dangerous like knives, scissors, and the stove.

I am not a fan of off-person carry.  It's too darn dangerous.  I have been stuck on purse watching detail more often than I like to fess up too, but just figure if I am asked to watch some ladies purse while she's using the restroom or what not, with out knowing she's got a handgun in there.  Not a problem for me because I aint stupid...  just a problem for the moron that is. 

If you carry, carry on your person.  That way its there when you need it and you don't run the risk of someone else getting there hands on it.  Seems to be common sense to me.

Also, imagine that the goverment allows carry in schools (in attempts to keep the trench coat maffia at bay).  All it takes is one stupid student to sneak in a go through his teachers purse/briefcase/what ever and shoot himself... 

Off person carry is just a stupid idea.

We're not told what kind of gun this was, but consider the Bersa, with it's long hard DA trigger pull of 8 to 13 lbs. Could the average 4 year old pull the trigger of a Bersa in DA? It makes me wonder if the firearm in question was one with a "soft" trigger, like a Glock or something. And I'm not bashing Glocks, I'm just asking.

13 pounds aint much...  Also, the new generations got stronger fingers from working out on the nintendo and xbox.

Mine can't. Neither can my 8 yr. old daughter without some struggle. It's not so much strength as hand size and leverage. I know jarhead79 bought his KelTec not because he was in love with the gun, but his kid couldn't pull the trigger.
I too am curious to know what kind of pistol it was.

Parrot, when your kids try to pull the trigger...  Do they use the traditional one hand method?  Or do you let them get creative.  I figure if my nephew is able to pull the head off of Barbie, he could grab the trigger with one hand and the grip with the other and probably get it to discharge.  ( I haven't done the engineering to know how many pounds are required to remove the head of a barbie doll...  However, I do know that too a three year old, apparently barbie's head looks like food...)

Sure, if a kid's absolutely determined, I'm sure he could figure out some way to pull the trigger. But hopefully with a hard trigger pull the kid will get discouraged or at least need enough time to give Uncle Dave a chance to come to his senses and wrestle the gun away. I'm not saying the gun's kid proof. I'm just saying the DA trigger pull on a Bersa is another factor that will give you just a second or two. If you're going to carry, but especially around kids, your brain has to be engaged at all times.

They both used both hands and both index fingers. I'm sure given enough time they would figure a way, like I said, I think it's more an issue of leverage than strength. Barbies head comes off pretty easily. After the first time it gets easier. It's a lot harder to get back on than off too. (Go ahead, ask me how I know)
