Re: If you are away from home

I have an emergency kit in the PU and the wife carries one in her sedan, which has trunk access from inside the vehicle.  Neither of us carry a firearm in our gear (Kaliforkinya).

My kit lives behind the seat of a Nissan PU, so combining everything into one package isn't possible.  I have a tarp and wool blanket inside of a waterproof cover/bag, 1 gallon of water next to the blanket and inside of an E. German combat pack lives my main survival kit.  The kit includes a USGI poncho, wool socks, watchcap, wool glove liners, leather gloves, longjohn shirt, 3 dehydrated meals, 3 coffee packs, 2 cocoa packs, SS cup, Esbit stove/fuel, fire tinder, firestarter tool, Katadyn micropur tablets, TP, Eriksson Mora 711 with kydex sheath, pocket binos, First Aid Kit, Emergency bivy, compass, Fiskars saw and SAK.  Attached to the outside of the pack is a USGI canteen/cup/cover and my Becker BK-7 knife.

Nice.  I love mine, i shoot it all the time, but it wont fit in the backpack assembled. i load up two mags and take it apart, then its totaly waterproof and floats that way. if i really needed a gun quickly, i can just use the one on my hip.

Re: If you are away from home

I have a pack in the back of the SUV with water, Cliff bars, survival blankets, ponchos, rope, firestarters and enough survival gear to go several days outdoors (yes, even rolls of camping toilet paper). I would have to look through it to give a complete list. Backpacking tent and hiking sticks are back there as well, with a change of clothes. I have a blanket and tarp attached to the pack that I can use to make a tent if necessary since (like Bullseye) sometimes the tent has to go in order to make room for  trips to HomeDepot,  hockey or soccer equipment, etc.

Right now I have a Ruger 10/22 back there, but I've been looking at the survival rifles since they would pack easier and not be quite as obvious as a rifle in the back. Is it possible to order extra magazines for the survival rifle, and are there any with larger capacity than 8 rounds? I was looking at the Henry site and didn't see anyplace you could order extra magazines. What's the accuracy like on those?

Re: If you are away from home

A ruger 10 /22 with a folding stock  4x scope (full size not a 22 scope)  and a few extra mags is a great survial gun.   The AR-7 its in a back pack and will float  Extra mags are around . But the 10/22 is better 22 bug out gun.

Re: If you are away from home

You guys have some fairly nice rifles stuck in your vehicles.  I personally would hate to get that stolen.  You can get one of the cheap Mossberg 22 Plinksters for $69 and spare 10rd mags can be found at china-mart.

You could even cut the stock off and mod it to go on with a couple wing nuts.

EDIT:  No offense to the in-house wing-nuts.  Big Smile [:D]

If the SHTF I am not going to trust a $69 rifle, I'll take my chances of getting my O/U Folding Henry Survival in  22mag/410 stolen before trusting an "El-cheapo" weapon for survival. One thing that I have in my Jeep survival kit besides what has been mentioned is a folding fishing rod (folds really small) and Zebco reel with braided fishing line an assortment of hooks, sinkers , artificial bait and a few bobbers that all fits in a small container in my kit. I store my stuff in a medium sized waterproof, collapsable, insulated cooler w/ shoulder strap and I think keeps people from thinking about theft because it doesn't look like anything valuable, just a cooler, my Grand Cherokees windows are tinted VERY dark and that helps.

Hey its your stuff.  FWIW the little mossberg has been 100% for at least 300rds and has good adjustable sights to boot.

BTW I had my jeep stolen last year and used to smash in the front of a convenience store.  Beat the dents out of the bumper and glassed the font grill back together and it is still truckin'.  Of course it now wears a break pedal lock to prevent it from wandering again.   Thieves should be drawn and quartered.

It is my stuff, yes , all I'm saying is I will not trust my life (surviving) on a $69 weapon when a $100 more can get something better suited and reliable, my $200 Ruger 10/22 has been good for 2000+,  my folding $200 Henry has an untold # of 22's and 410's w/ 0 problems, that's what I consider reliable as a survival weapon.

My 96 Jeep has 132 K and running GREAT, no issues except for waterpump replaced. I don't think you can kill the I-6cyl. motors in them besides running them dry on oil, AWESOME 4X4 systems, mine has Selec-Trac, with the right tires can go almost anywhere, trust me I've tried, Devil [6]

Re: If you are away from home

When Im working I commonly may be as much as 1200 miles from home so I have a fairly extensive kit and intend to upgrade to a customized (FULLY accurized, folding stock, good scope, 16" barrel) 10/22 to live in the truck full time.  At present It rotates between a stock 10/22, my AK with a side folding stock, a pump 20 ga and a single shot 20 ga for the long gun then I always have my side arm on and usualy a spare 13 round mag in the console.  I keep 2 lighters, a sharpening stone, 3 pocket knives and about 40' of parachute cord and my FS 9 mini on me all the time.  I have a Ford Ranger 4x4 with a camper shell (utility type with no windows) on the back.  I have my core BOB back there that has a couple rolls of cord, large sheet of heavy mil plastic, couple lighters, flint striker, fixed blade knife, first aid kit, locking cable snares, fish hooks for trout lines, small mess kit, bag of rice, seasonings, LED head lamp, spare batteries, 20'x5' gill net that rolls up slightly larger than a soda can, 2 water bottles hanging off it , a copy of John McPhearsons book 'Naked into the Wilderness' for refreshers and entertainment, Gatorade powder mix and a few other odds and ends in a small day pack.  THEN I have the 2 man dome tent, sleeping bag and my 2 foot lockers in there.  One foot locker is my kitchen and has Cup O' Noodles, Ramen Noodles, spices, more utensiles and an asortment of other long storage foods easy to prep or eat cold.  The other foot locker is the 'war chest' and has cleaning kits for my guns, about 250 rounds of 20 ga shells, 1k rounds of .22s, 200 rounds of .380, 200 rounds of 9mm, 4 30 rd AK mags loaded with FMJ and SP alternated, a knife sharpening kit and a few other odds and ends. Then theres a 5 gallon jug of drinking water and a 5 gallon can of gas. Thats just my normal load out, if have a bad feeling or what ever then it generaly gets slightly extended. I figure with the extra stuff in the foot lockers and such I can round out the BOB to the situation if its needed.
