Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

Cobb County, Georgia - $42.25 for 5 year license - took 28 days to get mine - some take longer. At the courthouse I was told that their applications had more than quadrupled in recent months as a result of the media coverage of the murder of a young woman hiker in north Georgia by a sociopathic stalker. That's the reason I applied. I hike the same area - with my wife.

Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

Hello everyone. I just joined and have a question I'd like to ask. I have two pistols, a chrome GT .380 automatic and a chrome 2nd series Colt Woodsman Target. I just inherited the Colt and I'm in the process of getting new handgrips for it. I don't know what happened to the originals, but they were all warped-around like they got too hot or something.

Anyway, I think we have to take a class here in Arkansas before applying for a CCW permit. Does a single permit allow you to carry any concealed pistol, or is the permit specific to a particular firearm? I figure the Colt is way too long to try to conceal anyway, with the 6-inch barrel, but I might want to buy something a little lighter than the GT that I've owned for 30 years.

    Thanks,
    Larry

    Hi Larry and welcome,

I can't speak for your state but Michigan allows you to take the class with any safe, legal handgun.  I and my girlfriend both used .22's to keep the cost of ammo down (our class had us fire nearly 100 rds each).

Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

I live in Indiana, but had a similar experience to MustangAddict.
It took 5 days for me to get the form submitted and fingerprinted, then it took a week, yeah 7 days, for me to catch the Police Chief in to get my lecture and approval to submit the paperwork to the state. Every time I went there, during regular office hours(which cost me 27$ an hour in overtime to be there during "Their" office hours) the guy had gone home early.
I finally got a little stern and asked If I could make an appointment or something. The next day he made time for me.So after a total run around time of 2 weeks, I finally got all the appropriate paperwork
to submit my request to the state police (request...that is such BS, I have a constitutional right man)
for a permit aka licence to carry a handgun. One gets the distinct feeling that they REALLY don't
want to allow you to have one.
      Ok I digress...
Anyway finally submitted to State Police on the 18th, and now I wait. Can take as much as 60 days here
according to the documentation. I'm guessing i will be cooling my heels for 59 days. Grrrrr

Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

I live in New york state. So all pistol permits are Concealed carry. unless it's for premis.
In 2003 I got a hunting and target permit in Saratoga county. (At that time the curent  county judge would not give you a unrestriceted permit) That took three months, two seperate classes totalling 8 hours, an FBI backround check, A state police backround check,  the county judges approval, and a little over a hundred dollars. Not to mention I had to put money down on a gun I couldn't touch just to aplly for the permit, Just so  they had numbers for the permit.
This year having moved to Rennslear county I was able to get an unrestricted permit. that took a $20 course, and A handwritten letter to the county judge. That took two months. so Iguess from start to finish It took 5 months of waiting to get a unrestricted concealed permit.

Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

p-t-max, your a lucky guy.  Mine showed up in September of 07 after 102 days.  They say that a Utah CFP is one of the best to have, but out-of-state applicants have really bogged the system down.  Since I got mine I heard a rumor that they started to give priority to resident applications, but I have not confirmed this.

Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

I found out what is involved in obtaining a concealed handgun license in Arkansas. You first have to locate a handgun safety instructor and complete the class. Then you send $144.25 with the completed forms for a new permit, $60.00 if it is a renewal. The specifics are below.

Arkansas does issue carry and conceal weapon (CCW) permits. State law requires that CCW permits be approved within 120 days unless the applicant fails to qualify. Arkansas' CCW permit qualifies as a National Instant Criminal System (NICS) check when buying firearms. The following steps will show you how to get a concealed weapon permit in Arkansas.

    Step 1:
Be 21 years old to apply for a CCW permit.

    Step 2:
Complete an application packet for a Concealed Handgun Permit from the Arkansas State Police. They can be reached at: Concealed Handgun Permit Administrator, Arkansas State Police, 1 State Police Plaza Drive, Little Rock, AR 72209, or you can download the application and instructions from the Arkansas State Police website at www.asp.state.ar.us.

    Step 3:
Submit the completed application, payment for the license fee, payment for the fingerprint fee, a full set of fingerprints and a waiver to allow the police to access your medical records. The permit is good for four years and a renewal fee will be charged at that time.

    Step 4:
Provide a letter of reference from the circuit judge, county sheriff or prosecuting attorney of your county stating that you are free of any recent felony convictions if the background check shows any felony convictions more than 10 years old.

    Step 5:
Read Opinion No. 2003-244 at www.state.ar.us that allows city and county parks to prohibit firearms. Arkansas state law also generally prohibits concealed handguns in police stations, jails, courthouses, polling places, government buildings, sporting events, bars, schools, airports and churches. A premises owner also may post a sign readable from 10 feet stating that handguns are prohibited.

A Concealed Handgun License holder’s license is subject to immediate suspension or revocation if:
    1. License holder is arrested for any violent act.
    2. License holder is arrested for any felony.
    3. It is determined that license holder has been consuming alcoholic beverages while in possession of a firearm, or if the license holder is an occupant of a vehicle in which an open container of alcoholic beverage is present.
    4. License holder is found to be in possession of a firearm in any location prohibited by law.
    5. License holder is a fugitive from justice (misdemeanor or felony warrants).
    6. License holder becomes ineligible due to mental health treatment.
    7. License holder is convicted of two or more DWI charges within a three-year period.
    8. License holder is determined to be mentally incompetent.
    9. License holder is arrested for the illegal possession of a weapon.
    10. License holder Is found to be carrying a handgun type not authorized.
    11. License holder, in the opinion of a chief of police, sheriff or other law enforcement agency director, becomes a menace or danger to society.
    12. License holder is determined to have been arrested for violation of another state's handgun or firearms law.
    13. It is determined that license holder has provided false information in obtaining a concealed handgun license.

    Where Concealed Handguns are Prohibited

It is a violation of the Arkansas Concealed Handgun License law to carry a concealed handgun into any of the locations listed below:

Any police, sheriff or Arkansas State Police office.

    1. Arkansas Highway Police facility.
    2. Detention facility, prison or jail.
    3. Courthouse or courtroom.
    4. Any polling place.
    5. Meeting place of any government entity.
    6. Meeting place of any session of the Arkansas General Assembly or committee of the General Assembly.
    7. Any athletic event not related to firearms competition in which the license holder is participating.
    8. Any part or section of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises, except a restaurant.
    9. Any part of section of an establishment in which alcohol is consumed on the premises, except a restaurant.
    10. Any school, college, community college, or university campus building or school/college event unless the event is for the purpose of participating in an authorized firearms related activity.
    11. Inside the passenger terminal of any airport, unless the handgun is encased for shipment by lawful transportation.
    12. Any church or other place of worship.
    13. Any place where the possession of firearms is prohibited by federal law.
    14. Any place where a property owner or manager has exercised discretion to prohibit the possession of a firearm.
    15. Participating in a parade or demonstration for which a permit is required.
    16. At a private residence without having first advised the occupants that the license holder is carrying a concealed weapon and given the permission to carry the handgun.

Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

Here in Calhoun County in Southwest Michigan:  Took my class on 3-20-08; applied for CCW on 3-24-08; I'm going before the gun board to pick it up on 4-9-08.  That's a grand total of 2 weeks and 2 days!!  I'm told these results are not typical Big Smile [:D]  My girlfriend applied at the same time and her background check did not come back yet so hers will likely be next month (the gun board only meets on the second Wed. of every month) this time frame is pretty typical for around here.

Total cost: $99 for CCW class + $105 for CCW application = $204--good for five years

Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

I live in MO but I decided to go with a non-resident Utah license.  I received it last week...9 weeks and six days after I sent it in.  I've heard that MO takes about 45 days though.  MO is also a bit more expensive.  $150 for the initial which lasts three years with a $50 (or$65..I can't recall) renewal.

    Gotta love reciprocity.

Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

I'm in Missouri and it varies by county. $125 for the class, $80 for the paper work at the county, $11 at the DOR for the ID. Good for three years, took a total of 11 days for start to finish. I hear they're trying for a lifetime permit which would be great. Kurt

Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

It took me about 85 days here in Florida, but I didn't electronically wire my fingerprints to the Dept.
of Aggriculture, which is supposed to make it arrive sooner. And man, can they mess up a good picture.
Our permits are for 5 years in length.
