Anybody ready to say the "R" word yet? Or do you think we're still in growth mode?

Slow job market?  The problem I see over and over again is people who want the job or type of job they want where they want it.  They are unwilling to take a lower paying job than the one they just lost.  They are unwilling to change fields.  They are unwilling to relocate.  I know there are exceptions to this, but in my experience this is prevalent.

Are certain areas in this great land of ours suffering through a recession?  Absolutely, but that does not equate to a national recession.  Are certain areas in this great land of ours struggling with higher-than-desireable unemployment figures?  Certainly, but that does not equate to a national unemployment rate problem.

There are plenty of areas in this great land of ours that are unable to find enough qualified people to fill the available well-paying positions companies are seeking to fill.  If they could, all the other types of positions -- right down to the sacker at the grocery store and the burger flipper at the local eatery -- would be available as well.

This last paragraph brings me to the other problem as I see it.  People want a job, but they don't want to take the necessary steps to be qualified for the plethora of jobs that are actually available.  If folks would stop bickering and whining and start going back to school or getting some new training, then maybe we'd see some real change in this great land of ours.

OK, now that I've put my $.02 in concerning the job market, how about soaring prices at the pump.  Don't get me wrong, I hate paying $4 a gallon for gas.  I hate it, but let's explore a couple of possibilities.  The way I see it there are basically two possible outcomes to continually soaring fuel prices.  One is IMHO good, and the other is IMHO terrible.  The one with which we end up will depend on the choices people make -- not politicians, but regular individuals and families.

On the good side, soaring fuel prices cause local businesses in small-town America to thrive.  It now costs me an extra $8 or so just to drive to Wally World and back, so I am much more likely to buy what I can locally in my small town.  I've lived in more than one small town that used to be a fairly bustling center of activity but has become all but a ghost-town.  Soaring fuel prices can actually change that, if people will make rural choices and bring back the thriving American small-town that was such a staple in our glory-days.

If, however, people insist on fighting the rising cost of fuel by urbanizing more and more, then this country's problems will only grow worse and worse.  Think about it.

As much as I hate to say it, because I truly hate paying $4 a gallon at the pump, but the fuel prices are good for America. Never before has there been such a concentrated consumer push for alternative energy and fuel efficient vehicles. Finally we may actually reduce our dependence on foreign oil, I see that as a very good thing. There's many opportunities out there for us to explore. Israel, for example, is extremely smart, they are committing to a plan to become an entire nation entirely of fuel alternatives. Granted they're only the size of New Jersey but I think we could do better. Also, take a look at what people are paying at the pump in europe right now...glad I don't have those gas prices...

As for whether we are in a recession, I think there are sections of the country in a recession (i.e. Detroit, maybe Los Angeles etc) but those are brought on by their dependence on a single industry or hyperinflated real estate prices. We all knew there was a real estate bubble and it was going to have to pop sometime. Frankly I'm quite amazed we haven't had a recession already...think about it. Over the past eight years we've had 9/11, a war in Afghanistan, a war in Iraq, Hurricane Katrina, massive flooding in the Midwest, storms all over. Anyone of these events could have brought us into a recession, all things considered, the economy is pretty stable.

At least with Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity etc, we get to hear both sides of whats going on and what can be done to solve the problem.

On the left all you hear is how bad this country is and how we should kiss the heals of every nation in the world and be concerned about what they think.

I think it is time for this country to be concerned about this country, and screw what the rest think. If this country just all of a sudden STOPPED GIVING all that it does to the world, the world would come to a screeching halt.

But this country NEVER gets any recognition for all the good it does, or all the good Bush has done. You want to blame some one for the crap going on in this country? Look at congress, This country has gone to hell in a hand basket since the Democraps took over.

Look it up, check to see what condition this country was in before they took over and look at what has become of it since.

Put the blame where it belongs.

Maybe we're in a recession, maybe not.  Maybe gas and health care costs are gonna run us into poverty, maybe not.  Maybe falling housing prices and the mortgage crisis is a catastrophe, maybe not.  But there's absolutely NOTHING a president or Congress can do about any of those things, not during their terms in office.  When they do get involved, they go for the quick fix and just muck things up worse.  They have to look at long-term solutions, and nobody wants to do that because it won't get them reelected.

I do know one thing - the answer is not bigger government, which is what George Bush has allowed to happen.  And it's not more taxes or wealth redistribution, which is what Obama is promising.  Reagan was right - smaller government and lower taxes mean more money for you 'n' me AND the government.  Money in the hands of business means more jobs, more growth, and more across-the-board income to tax.  The closest thing we can get is McCain, and I'm still not sure about him.

My only consolation is the firm belief that no matter which idiot we elect, we'll get through it.

Agreed, EXCEPT, with Obama we will lose some Constitutional rights and freedoms along the way.

I believe it was Greenspan who used the duck phrase when talking about the early days of the Bush I recession.

OK and here you are quoting two liberal rags the Washinton Compost and the Associated Depress.
You need to search out some sources that are not in the left wings pocket.
And I am not saying right wing here. Find something more centered. So you get to hear the other story of whats going on in the USA.

I wrote post about a month ago. It stated that the 535 "knucleheads".... yeah all of them, in Washington D.C. wanted to fix any one of the issues out there today, they could. They just can't be divided, playing along party lines. Until the politic's/ finger pointing stops nothing is going to get done.

And we are the ones paying for it!

It's unbelievable to think that they work for us, We the people!  Fire 'em all, don't re-elect anyone that doesn't have America's best interest at the forefront.
