    Traveling when SHTF

I have been pondering what to do if the SHTF...  My best bet is to get me and mine back to Tennessee where my family is with land and resources.  Getting from point A to point B may not be easy or straightforward (Marshall Law, storm damage, zombies, UN troops, etc...).

We have 2 SUVs to pack up kids and supplies.  I plan to run blocker for the wife and kids.  I was wondering if anyone had ever thought of foam filled tires?  Or pre-treating with something like tire slime or fix-a-flat to make sure you aren't forced to stop (tire spikes, storm debris, zombies, UN troop helmets)Stick out tongue [:P]   I don't think run-flats would be good enough.

Come on!  What do you think?  It would be nice to have a set of mud tires half filled with foam.

I never watched "Jericho".  That was the nuclear holocaust show right?

The only problem I can see with filled tires is balancing, but if you can't go more than 45mph it won't be a problem.

Iam just going to beam up.

Secret is to be at location befor SHTF  You should be able to follow events and see when to go.

Their should also be a 2nd plan if can't reach Tn  Where you are or close by.

One of the reasons Iam trying to get you people to meet and greet and start BT chapters Is in case of SHTF  you might band and work togather . Your chances as a group is better.

But  I don't hear of any results except from American girl. Lexington area, Cinci ,Dayton, Louisville all have members in area. But no meetings.

As far as I know I am alone here in the Bay Area too.  Miklaw is give or take about 100 miles away.
My first priority would be to make it to family in Reno area, then back to Utah. If possible, Tennessee would be my permanent hole up spot, if I could get there.
BTW, I paid $4.91 for diesel yesterday. I expect to see $5 over Memorial Day weekend.

    Re: Traveling when SHTF

The closer you are to your safe zone the better.  S... hits the fan slowly.  MT nailed it to watch the signs. Foam tires are the norm in protection I believe.  I may be wrong.  But they're pricey.   Have you considered extra spares?  But....  now that earthquakes may be re-awakening the slumbering New madrid fault, you may not have a warning in your parts. Volcanoes, earthquakes are tangible threats.  Do what makes sense to a concerned family man.  Keep alot of bug out equipment.  There was a list recently here of what we need in our kit.  Maybe someone can remember and find that.  Dont forget kids meds, or your and wifes meds.  Also, more of a question.  Can anyone take those defensive driving courses that security personnel take.  That type of training can pay dividends both in SHTF, car jacking and general rush hour.  Good luck.  I'll be watching this thread with particular interest

Blackwater here in NC offers the driving courses to civilians.  They also offer several shooting courses.  http://www.blackwaterusa.com/courses/AT_NC_courses.html

    Re: Traveling when SHTF

Pretty lonely here too and we have my wifes sister and mother about 50 miles north of us, which if it is worth heading there to get out of way of chemical or radiation contamination, then that's where we would head.  Otherwise, we would probably hold up.

We also have friends in the So. Lake Tahoe area, as well as on the Coure d' Alene reservation in Idaho, but that's a chunk of distance to travel and likely wouldn't make it, if it's wide spread SHTF scenario.

    Re: Traveling when SHTF

By FAR the best bet would be to already be where you want to be if SHTF.  Idealy liveing there before hand but if that isnt possible try to get out early on and get there before it gets to deep.

So far as the tire situation, I would say the run flats on it and a full set of spare tires along with the bars to take the tires off the rims, several tubes (you can turn a punctured tubless tire into a tube tire and keep running on it), a plug kit for small punctures and an air compressor.  If that wont get you there then you probably will be down to hikeing it and a real bad time.

    Re: Traveling when SHTF

We are in the country already with grown children living within 5 miles of us . We are close enough to Savanah River Site so if anything happened there (explosion) that we could not escape the radiation , but it would be fast.  My bigest problem is that I'm a loner and have not tried to communicate with neighbors outside of speaking when the drive past .

    Re: Traveling when SHTF

Spot, we have pretty much the same scenario here, where we are close enough to a possible danger zone that getting away from the radiation isn't possible if it's hit and we are down wind.  We live in county, just outside of city limits and up on a hill, near the end of a private drive that services 9 homes.  Our neighbors are just plain weird.  I thougt we might be able to set up a mutual *you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours* situation with them, but we've been here a couple of months and havn't had words with any of them, except one woman that waved.  I figure we are on our own till SHTF, then they'll be coming around for handouts.
