    Dressed to get Killed

My wife is at it again, buying me pants that "look and fit good", however when thay "fit good" there's no room to carry!  Way too tight and not comfortable and no room for a holster of any kind, pocket, belt in the pants, forget it!  What's a guy to do?  I'd rather be baggy and carry than styling and gunless...

    Re: Dressed to get Killed

I posted this yesterday in Holster Talk, but it sound more like it belongs here.  These pants look pretty good.  Mabey you can get her to compromise.

I use about 50% IWB carry and when I'm not wearing jeans I like a Docker style pants made by Hagger.  They have something they call a "comfort fit waist band".  Basically they have a little elastic panel at 3:00 and 9:00 that allows for about an inch or so of expansion.  Perfect for CCW, but still fit nicely when I'm not armed, work, mall etc.

Ankle holster??   Keltec P3AT or P32 in a "Wallet" rig in your back pocket??

If all else fails stand up to your wife and tell her either since your pants are too tight she has to carry a 1911 in her purse.

    Re: Dressed to get Killed

My wife still doesn't understand my "obsession" with carrying.  Last night there was a feature on the local news about how many people are buying guns for protection and taking CC classes because of the spike in crime in Charlotte.  They made a big deal about it because most of the people buying are women who are scared.  Local gov just approved another 3Million to help fight crime.  The news station even posted where to go to take safety and CC courses, yet my wife still bugs me.  We have even been in a couple iffy situations shopping at night where she was glad I was carrying, but still makes a big deal about it later.  She just assumes I will always be able to protect her, gun or no gun.  I guess I married a sheep, but she is a great wife & mother.

I've been eyeing the Dockers myself and the local goodwill shops have plenty of them on their racks in like new condition in lite & dark Khaki, as well as green, starting at $3.00 a pair.  They are comfortable and look good and even for the price new, which is reasonable, what's to lose.

    Re: Dressed to get Killed

If you're going to carry, you have to dress around the gun. Either buy your jeans an inch or two bigger, or go with the Dockers or Haggers or whatever works. The last pair of slacks I bought I got at the Big & Tall section. Unfortunately, I'm more "Big" than "Tall". Sad [:(]  These pants have a 2 or 3 inch elastic panel on each hip, providing room to grow. Big Smile [:D] Yes [Y]

IMO, ankle carry isn't a good primary carry option because there are too many limitations. It's hard to draw from the ankle quickly, and only if you're crouching, kneeling or sitting. Standing, walking, or running, you can't get to your gun. I have a really good ankle holster in the closet that never gets worn any more because I tried it for a time, but after a while it just didn't make sense.

Don't be a slave to fashion. If you're going to carry you have to elevate your behavior, your level of awareness, and alter your style. Dress around the gun.

    One man's opinion. YMMV.

    Re: Dressed to get Killed

Have you tried to OWB carry with your shirt out, or are the pants even too tight for an external holster?

BTW, the thread title is spot on!

    Re: Dressed to get Killed

I've got some of those Haggar slacks that have the elastic waistbands -- I like them.  With them, I don't have to buy them an inch bigger, instead I can buy them to fit and they'll work when carrying as well.

For those of us who wear jeans most of the time, I found that Bass Pro Shops store brand -- RedHead, makes what they call "Tournament Jeans", that are primarily intended for fishing.  They also have elastic  in the waistbands.  I've got several pairs of them, and those have become my favorite jeans.  Like the Haggar slacks, I can buy them to fit.

One thing about trying on non-stretch waistband slacks & jeans -- how do you handle getting a proper, dressing room fit that accomodates your carry gun?  I suppose that you'd have to do all your own checking for fit in front of a mirror, hoping that there is one in the dressing room itself.  Usually, that isn't the case -- SWMBO and/or the tailor usually do the checking for fit, and there often isn't a mirror in the changing room itself.

Especially -- how do you do it when you are having a suit tailored?  Unless, that is, you know your tailor well enough to know that he/she won't freak when you are trying on the slacks with your carry gun in the waistband.  Personally, I don't know any tailors well enough for that.  Come to think of it, I don't know ANY tailors in this area.  How DO you walk into a place like the Men's Wearhouse and buy a suit -- tailored, of course -- that will accomodate your carry piece?  The only thing I can see doing is just get the suit tailored normally and then either use a shoulder holster (which I don't have) or just pocket carry.  At least dress slacks have deep enough pockets to accomodate pocket carry.  Maybe the answer is to wear your holster to the mens wear store, empty.  The tailor may still freak, but at least you aren't in voilation of the law (your locale may differ).

    Re: Dressed to get Killed

I would just tell the tailor in a proper manner what my requirements are regarding my carry issues then see how bad he wants my business? With a suit or sports coat I carry owb anyway so isnt a problem. With jeans I just try em on at home and take em back if they dont work.. Lately I get most of my cloths from the tent maker!

Actually, I remember reading on another forum (I think it was Defensive Carry) that Men's Warehouse stores are generally quite gun friendly. Don't know if it applies to all of their stores, but there were several posters who said they wore their guns when being fitted and had no problems.
