    ensure or other canned drinks

My wife and I have talked about ordering a few dozen cases of ensure or something similar to join our food stash.  We would need Milk-product-free protein/vitamin shakes.  long experation dates would be a huge plus. Anyone know what our options are?  Where should I start looking?

You might look into buying powder whey protein (stuff body builders use).  It normally has a decent vitamin mix (and amino acids) and a relatively long shelf life (normally around 3 years or more).

Should be cheaper than ensure as well, if I remember right.  (Haven't bought ensure in a long time)

Great idea! never thought about it but you can buy it in bulk and as long as it stays dry....  Thanks,   I used to take that stuff all the time when I was building.

I was just looking at the stuff, I think if you buy the meal replacement variety instead of just the straight protein, you get more vitamins and good Omega - 3 and 6 fats.  (Supposedly good for you...).  Appears to be close to the same price.   Also try netrition.com they have worked good for me in the past.

Hey Dave. That is why i like this site because it has the actual meal replacement instead of just straight protien. They have a good variety of choices depending on what you are looking for,and you are correct with the omega3,6 and actually 9 also. The site you listed also has a nice selection of products and their prices seem to be real good.My 17 year old son is in the R.O.T.C. and likes the protien bars  and drinks for when they do their five mile runs, and they get expensive buying them in the reguler stores.

I'm one of those people that can't digest Whey products..Causes a gastronomic KaBoom.Music [8]  I can use the soy protein.

If it was for survival would  you want to buy the weight gain type products for the extra caloric content?

My lady and I have been considering meal replacement and were asking ourselves the same question of whether or not we wanted high cal or just vitamin.  I'm thinking just vitamin with a couple of hundred calories, because if I'm keeping my weight or adding weight, the unprepared and hungry neighbors are going to get suspicious and GOD knows that no matter how prepared we are, we can't feed all our neighbors, their families, extended families and whomever else they've decided to tell.  Gotta hide it, or in my opinion, we risk losing it.

Might be a good idea to mix products... have some high in protein, some in calories, some in vitamins..   after all you never want to limit your diet to same stuff.

Re: ensure or other canned drinks

Yeah, should have added that I use Whey protein powder now that supplies me with 62% of my needed protein and the wife uses a soy product for potein.  We have meal replacement bars that are 280 calories and when adding a Vitamin/mineral enriched meal replacement drink each day, would give us 500-600 additional calories each day, completing our nutritional needs.  Not enough to put weight on, but when combined with a couple of small meals, will help us keep our strength up and our immune system up and running.

Re: ensure or other canned drinks

The newer stuff has come a long ways compared to years ago when it only came in one flavor.I can remember when i worked in the institutions for violent behaviors and had to give some of the residents ensure as a suppliment, and YUK doesn`t even come close to describing it.

Yeah, I don't care for the ensure, but no matter the taste, if it works, then it's doing what it's supposed to do.  There are other suppliments out there that aren't bad.  The wife buys a meal replacement that LA weightloss sells and it's better than ensure, but it isn't as complete as other suppliments, which is why we are going to look elsewhere.

    Hey jc',

For the unknowledgable sorts maybe you could give us an idea what you guys are refering to and why. I looked quickly at the site and I am not sure what I'm looking at. Is this kind of stuff to take the place of a regular meal but supply the same nutrients or in addition to a meal. My inquiring mind needs to know...

I take it that powdered drinks would need to be mixed with water, milk has no shelf life. powdered milk?
