    parrothead_madness:
Denatured alcohol, not rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol has way too much water in it. Also make sure your alcohol storage containers are airtight, alcohol is very hygroscopic.

I think this needs further discussion but jeez PH hygroscopic is such a BIG word Big Smile [:D]

If you're worried about long term storage you can dip the top of the bottle in melted wax to seal the alcohol from the air.

For those that haven't seen one of these.... it's a "Pepsi can stove".  You can make one of these out of just about any kind of can.  The one I made is a pressurized alcohol model.  It boiled 2 cups of water in 6.5 minutes.

Warming up..... these need a little alcohol burning underneath to boil the alcohol in the can.

    Ready.....

    Nice!
I like to tinker with such as well. When I made a few of them a while back, I had better results making more smaller holes. Looks like you have 8 on there about 1/16th each?
I'm just going by memory but I'm pretty sure I settled on 14 holes about .015 if my memory serves.

What is it you have sitting in the middle for pressure? I just used a penny usually but on the last couple I put a nut-sert in it and a thumbscrew like the ones from mini bull designs.

I like the tin can pot stand too.

Re: Cooking during power and fuel shortages

It is just a washer with a 2in screw to seal the fill hole.  I think I need a bigger pot stand.  I pour a lid of alcohol in the bottom and light it to preheat, but as you can see I had to butcher the small stand to get enough airflow.

I do have 8 holes.  This is my first attempt after seeing different designs on the web.  The 91% iso -OH gives good heat but turns my pots black.

Jes, nice job on the stove.  I have plans in mind for one as well.  I'll be placing nail holes every 1/4", or maybe even closer, depending on how it works out.  I saw a combination stove stand - windscreen - pot stand a guy was using one day in the woods.  What he used, was a small coffee can cut in half so it was half it's height.  He notched it all 4 sides around the bottom like a hobo stove for draft, and affixed a small metal cap in the center of the bottom for preheating and placed a copper mesh screen an inch or so over the preheat pot for the stove to set on.  He flared the top edge for the pot to rest on and his little homemade alcohol stove worked great with it.

Here is a web site with several different versions of alcohol stoves.  I think you can use rubing alcohol in a pinch, but it will leave soot all over your pot.  Definitely stock something else, but if you've got nothing else it works.  I don't know about indoor safty though, soot doesn't sound very clean burning to me.  what do you guys think.
