Re: Poll: Why do you own guns?
I have always enjoyed collecting knives and guns. Durring my Army career I got to shoot and play with all sorts of weapons which in turn just made me want more. I would have a warehouse full of Guns Knives and Muscle Cars if money and wife would allow. But on fixed income not possible .
As for SD one or 2 pistols would do. The chance you will ever need one are slim depending on your life style of course .
As some lifestyles will almost certainty bring a firearm into play sooner or later. Its better to change the lifestyle than depend on the firearm.

This is a good point. Change lifestytle where you can to make you safer. But we all have different challenges and doing so can be hard for some.

Re: Poll: Why do you own guns?
I was thinking people like 1% bikers, gangbangers, dope heads, people that think their a bad ass and always trying to prove it ,or people that just like to hang out on wrong side of town because they think its cool.
Less than 1% of these people will ever change so they will end up on wrong side of gun. sooner or later. Those of you here a Bersa Talk will hopefully never need to use your pistol for anything more than target shooting.. At least that's my sincear hope.. Knife and gunshot wounds are not pain free.
Remember you get in a fist fight ,you will get hit. So every reason to belive you get into knife of gunfight you will be cut or shot.. If not, you were lucky. If you are wounded you must keep fighting ... You must be last man standing.!!

Re: Poll: Why do you own guns?
I have been hunting for about ................ let me think.......... WOW 30 plus years. Just recently got into shooting at the range. Took the CCW class about a year ago and haven't gone for my permit yet. The problem is now in Ohio after the CCW passed they make it almost impossible to carry because it's posted almost everywhere............. NO WEAPONS. I recently moved into a better hood and sleep much better knowing that I more than likely won't be woke up by a BG trying to get in the house. I truely thought I was gonna have to use deadly force at the old home. There are a bunch of crazies out there. I felt I should get out before something bad happened. Anyway, I was ready for that if it happened also. Colt 45 70 series by my bed. Now I sleep with it in my safe. Got my Bersa handy just in case.
KINDA LIKE A LITTLE EXTRA INSURANCE POLICY.![Wink [;)]](/emoticons/emotion-5.gif)

Re: Poll: Why do you own guns?
I was up in NW Ohio last Aug class reunion and only place I found posted was Mc Donalds didn't see signs any where else. Only I couldn't stand was the stuiped open carry when in a car. Really should think about moving to a more gun friendly state.

Re: Poll: Why do you own guns?
Well, I hunted quite a bit when I was much younger, but I quit
waterfowl hunting when the lead shot ban came about (couldn't afford
the steel shot), and I never went deer hunting since I enlisted in the
Army -- too busy, lease fees were too high, but mostly I just lost that
overwhelming desire to climb up in a tree before the crack of dawn and
freeze my @$$ off. Meat is cheap at the supermarket. But I
kept my various guns anyway until in '98 when my first wife was in need
of major surgery (that she didn't survive) that wasn't going to be
covered by our insurance, and I sold all of them to help raise money
for that. I didn't get another gun until just recently, and that
was mainly for home defense and range shooting. And just 2 days
ago I picked up gun #2, my new Bersa .380, which I intend to use as a
CCW once I get my license. It will also end up doubling as the
wife's bedside gun until I find something that she is better able to
handle.
From what I understand of Georgia (being fairly new here), it isn't
difficult at all to get a CCW license, but the list of places that you
can't carry is pretty long -- frustratingly long.

" As some lifestyles will almost certainty bring

So true. And to a large extent, I've been living that philosophy
since about '88 -- I dumped all my wild hooligan buddies (one of whom
was later shot dead, that I know of), settled down, got
respectable. But something just recently has happened here in
Atlanta that just underscores the need for being armed anyway, and is
why I'm going to go ahead and get my CCW license and start
carrying: And that is what just happened Friday, the courthouse
shooting and all. Not the courthouse shooting part of it, because
having a carry license wouldn't have helped me there (can't carry in
the courthouse, you know), but all the parking lot carjackings that
followed. Carrying would have helped any one of those people, and
now there's the issue of copycats -- who knows how many bozos will now
think it is somehow cool to carjack people in the parking lots around
here? Anyway, those people who were carjacked weren't living any
sort of extra hazardous lifestyle, they were just at the wrong place at
the wrong time, and that wrong place is one that "normal" people would
not avoid. So, it seems that just living a nice, clean lifestyle
isn't enough. It takes being armed, too.

Re: Poll: Why do you own guns?
I chose other because I enjoy hunting with my firearms, target shoot, plink and have them for self protection.
I have actually used a pistol three times in my life for self protection, all three times againt beast not man. Twice while out squirrel hunting I was charged by feral hogs at close quarters, happened so fast the only thing I could do was grab my sidearm and shoot.
About 10 years ago I was coming home from work about 3am, walking from my car to the back door a very large Rotweiller came out from under my back deck and was on me before I knew what was going on. Luckly I had a small .380 stuck in my coat pocket and was able to employ it before I suffered major injury from the HUGE dog. Turns out the dog belonged to someone about a mile away and had kept the dog chained up inside a fensed in back yard because he was so mean.

Re: Poll: Why do you own guns?
I enjoy shooting at the range. Shooting is a wonderful
sport. Focus of the mind and body. However my Thunder DLX
also serves as a SD weapon. If it was only for sport i wouldn't
have 2 clips filled with Federal Hydrashocks. You never
know. As the cliche goes.

After all there are alot of crazys out there.

Re: Poll: Why do you own guns?
Lets not forget that with some of us, our lifestyle choice is one of
public service and in this public service we can be called on to deal
with some people that may want to harm us for that service. You
can run into these people anywhere and some of them live and shop in
the nice parts of town too! I carry a gun religiously. Not
out of fear but I feel I have an obligation to defend myself, my wife,
and my children (and anyone else around me actually). There are
bad people out there. Listen to the news lately and you'll see
that there truly are evil people out there. I try to make good
choices to avoid trouble whenever possible but I have run into many bad
people that walk silently among us. Some of them mind their own
business just like we do and some do not. I pray I will never
have to use deadly force on another person but I am not going to
pretend that its not a possibility.
I don't own anything that is worth enough money to shoot another
person over, but we all have things in our lives that are
priceless and I will defend those with my life!

Re: Poll: Why do you own guns?
On a lighter note, my Dad was a hardcore, left wing, anti-gun, liberal
democrat but he still owned several guns. I started to so some
research about firearms and I became an unabashed gun nut.
(Besides being a hardcore, right wing, pro-carry/pro-gun, conservative
republican along the way)
Guns have an artistry and a history to them and I dig being a gun owner
and as a citizen I think we have an obligation to be armed in some way
or another. I think it was Emperor Hirohito who said, "The United
States can not be invaded, there would be a gun behind every blade of
grass"

Re: Poll: Why do you own guns?
I've owned a gun since I was 16 (it was a .22 bolt action rifle and I'm now 54) and shot them since I was 12. I have several dozen handguns and about the same number of long guns. I have a bit of everything, from BP pistols, rifles and shotguns, to modern semi-autos and the newest bolt actions (bought a .17 HMR last year). While I consider myself a collector, I also hunt, belong to the NRA and a gun club and have a concealed handgun license. While I have many guns that would fill the equirements of my various my gun activities, the Bersa's are the only one's I've bought for the express purpose of personal defense. Compared to other guns currently available, besides possibly the CZ 2075 RAMI in either 9mm or 40 S&W, they are the only guns I would currently consider given their total package of options, quality and price.

Re: Poll: Why do you own guns?
This was a tough one to answer. I could have gone either with the joy of shooting or personal defense. I flipped a coin and chose the joy of shooting becauseit was why I was first drawn to guns.
I've always looked at my guns as a means of SD, but it wasn't until the recently I got serious about that and got my CCL.
