Two news items yesterday seemed to demonstrate the value of not only owning a gun but being allowed to carry it.
The first was the news that the crime rate in Florida has dropped again and is at the lowest level since 1971. Needless to say, the population of Florida has grown significantly since then. Governor Bush attributed the drop, in part, to the concealed carry law in Florida, including the recently passed deadly force provision.
The second was the declaration of a crime emergency in Washington, D. C. The murder, assault, and robbery rate has increased significantly. This is a city where residents are not allowed to have guns (it may be just handguns).
I selected personal protection as the primary reason. However, two secondary reasons are: 1. My wife and I are concerned that the anti-gun folks may succeed in outlawing guns or at least in making it much more difficult for law-abiding citizens to own them. 2. We live in Florida and are subject to the vagaries of the weather. If severe damage occurs in our area, chaos may not be far behind. I want to be prepared in all ways. After Katrina, I am more than ever aware that we can only depend on ourselves.
