Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

It only took 5 business days for me: "class to carry" in Franklin County, Ohio (Columbus). It is valid for 5 years.
I got my course certificate on Thursday night at 10pm, applied for a CHL on a Friday at 1:00pm, they called me the following Thursday at 10am to tell me to come down and pick up my permit. Do some prior research, call your issuing office, plan ahead and it's quicker.
I live in Columbus and had my choice of many classes around here from $100min - $150max. All of them included the books, extra handouts, range time, loaner guns, and the required 50 rounds of ammunition. I paid $125 for the course I took, because it was only a few blocks from my home.
The application photo doesn't have to be a $10 official passport photo in most counties. They told me just to take a photo of myself (shoulders up) and bring it in...that's what I did. Franklin County just staples your photo to the application form anyway as a visual reference. They take the official digital photo of you when you get the digital fingerprints and do the digital signature.
It came to: $125 + $55 = $180 for the true complete cost of my Ohio CHL.
Okay, it did cost me an additional 2 quarters in the parking meter for each of the two times I went downtown to the Sheriff's office. Make it $181 total then :)

I guess the good news is, here in Texas they are valid for 5 years so we don't have to go through the waiting thing too often!...........

    Nickelchew:
Jay explained the NC process nicely. In my county in NC, the wife had hers in about 30 days. Mine took about 60 days.

Mecklenburg took 90 days, and $90.00 to the Sherrif's dept.
    My course/certificate cost $75.00 (+ammo).
Good for 5 years, and no waiting to purchase handguns any longer! That alone is worth the cost and wait!!!
(Took 8 weeks just to get a purchase permit.)
Union County permit to purchase takes about 3 days....
    Go figure...

Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

Since it looks like I'll be moving shortly, I will be changing my address on my driver's license and want my CHL to match. So I called the Sheriff's CCW office yesterday to find out the process. They answered the phone on the first ring,  told me that I could simply inform them of the new address and they'd put it on file.
So I asked if I could get a new permit with the new address? They understood completely why I would want to do that. Told me to just drop in any day of the week without an appointment. They'll process it in 10 minutes while I wait (for a $15 replacement fee). And this is Franklin County (Columbus, Ohio)...a pretty busy place. I was impressed.

Just got mine Yesterday.  Almost 60 days here in Florida.  So much crime here in South Florida now, the Licensing Division and the FBI must be swamped with applications for the CWL.

In Fla it can run from a few weeks to 3 months or more.  They are really tough on exact wording and completed apps.  Screw up and it can add months to the wait.

Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

As others have said Colorado is a Shall Issue State and shall issue the permit in 90 days. Here in Northern Colorado (Larimer County) it takes between 83 and 87 days after the application is turned in.  You have to show evidence of handgun training and the cost for the permit is $152.50.  The cost for the training class varies amoung the instructors. My renewal took 13 days.  The permit is valid for 5 years.

The NRA Basic Handgun class meets the training requirements for the permit.

Evidence handgun training is as follows:

    □ A training certificate from a handgun training class (as defined in C.R.S. 18-12-202.5) obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of this application. It must be the original training certificate or a photocopy that includes the original signature of the class instructor.

    □ Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces (DD214) within the three years preceding submittal of this application.

    □ Proof of honorable discharge from a branch of the United States Armed Forces (DD214) that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of this application.

    □ Evidence that, at the time this application is submitted, the applicant is a certified instructor.

    □ Evidence of experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competitions or current military service.

    □ A certificate showing retirement from a Colorado Law Enforcement Agency that reflects pistol qualifications obtained within the ten years preceding submittal of this application.

    Hope this helps.

Re: How long to get a CCW in your state?

101 hours total from application to CHL in hand. Delivered the paperwork to the Sheriff's office Monday Oct 1 at 9:30 am. They called me at 12:17 pm today to say it was ready.  I picked up the CHL after work Oct 5 at 2:30 pm.

Not a bad turn around (Monday to Friday) here in Ohio.  $89 + tax for the course and $60 (fee + photo) for the license. The family needed to go out tonight and the BT 380 went right along for the ride. Stay safe and have a great day.
