    Re: Scope or Open Sights

I also would use a scope since the eyes aren`t what they used to be.Age and an injury don`t help.

    Re: Scope or Open Sights

I still use open sights My eyes are getting old and groups are about 18" now. But hey easy to score. If fire 20 and only find 15 holes well some went thru a previous hole.Big Smile [:D]

On a combat rifle I want open sights . Sniper and hunting a scope.  Except on a lever gun any body puts a scope on a Winchester lever action should be whipped with a 2x4  On a marlin a good kick where it hurts.

    Re: Scope or Open Sights

I'm not a hunter (yet) but I do participate in "high power rifle" matches where iron sights are required.

When I shoot with a scope I feel as though I'm cheating.  When I start hunting I may start, though.

On  good day I can shoot a pretty mean pattern with a match quality AR15 and iron sights.  On a bad day sometimes multiple bullets go throught the same hole.  Usually the one closest to the center.

I don't know why ... I just like iron sights on my long guns.

    Re: Scope or Open Sights

Open sights since most of my long guns are mil surp and I refuse to modify them in any way shape or form.

This is a multicultural home. I have Argentinian guns, Brazilian guns, Russian guns, Yugoslavian guns...

    Re: Scope or Open Sights

Depends on the gun.  As Kimigirl said, I'm not going to screw up an old military rifle by putting a new civilian scope on it.  As for my others, I probably won't put a scope on my Beretta Storm Cx4, since it's supposed to have a range of <100yards.  If anything, i'll put a red dot on it.  I do have a scope on my 30-30 and my .22 bolt though.

And they shall beat their swords into plowshares, for if you hit a man with a plowshare, he's going to know he's been hit.

    Depends on gun.

    I have scope on Rem 710 model 30.06 3x9

I have scope on Rem 22 hornet 3x9

I have the original scope on the manlicker, A german sniper riffle my grandfather shipped home duren WW 11. It is a russan scope.

Red dot scope on all 4 tactical AR's

    Open sights on Win 30/30

    Open sights on H&R 22

Open sights on all black powder arms

    Open sights on M1 garand.

Any old collector arms that did not have a scope, does not get one

    Re: Scope or Open Sights

Kinda depends... If I think a rifle needs a scope, I put one on it... As I get older, and find the eyes aren't what they once were, I also find that most of my rifles need scopes, so, most of them now carry scopes... But I do still have a number that don't wear glass...mostly older guns, military rifles, and tube-fed lever guns shooting "brush" cartridges.
Seems to me that "Time" is merely an artificial concept, created by man, with which to hassel himself.

    Re: Scope or Open Sights

I  prefer a scope as it is easier on the eyes - getting older is no fun at all......

    Re: Scope or Open Sights

I’ve always been an iron sites kind of guy but there are situations that absolutely call for a scope.  For example; scopes are needed when shooting the 22-250 at 300 yards.  It is kind of tough with iron sites, the front site totally obscures the target.  Recently I was shooting a Marlin 880 22lr I had not paid much attention to until now.  I find that this gun out shoots the sites, or at least it out shoots my skill level with open sites.  I am seriously thinking of a scope on this gun.

On the other hand there are many guns that it would be criminal to put a scope on.  A couple that come to mind are any lever action gun or any traditional muzzleloader.  Note I said Traditional muzzleloader.  What you do with those modern rifles that happen to require insertion of a modern propellant and sabot modern projectile through the bore, I couldn't care less.

    Sincerely,
    Reverend Rich

    Re: Scope or Open Sights

Scopes on my rifles. I just can't see very well anymore. I have to use contacts for shooting my red dot on my Ruger Mark 2. With my glasses on I see multiple dots. Anyone else have that problem? No, I wasn't hitting the bottle.

    Re: Scope or Open Sights

Sure are a lot of us old farts with old eyes on here.  Most of my rifles are scoped.  Mostly take head shots.
I sold the remainder of my guns that weren't stolen
