    Re: Light or no light

No Light.  My bedside gun is a S&W 686 which, of course, is a revolver and has no rail.  Even if/when I switch to the PT-92 which DOES have a rail, I still don't like the light on the gun and have no intentions of hanging one on it.

I've got one of those nice, big lights with a handle -- you know, the kind that takes the big square lantern battery -- by my bedside.  I can hold on to it securely, and it makes a good off-hand basher (it probably won't survive it, but they are cheap so I don't care) if needed.  It is old-tech, but it works for me.

Light in 1 hand, revolver in the other, SWMBO armed w/her revolver backing me up & able to phone if needed.

    Re: Light or no light

I have an M3 on my Springfield for the house......I'd rather have the OPTION of using it if need be and being already attached to the gun it's one less thing I have to fumble around trying to find. Its easy to just flick on, flick off or even pressure on pressure off for quick checks.

Another nice side benefit is that my sights line up squarely with the bright center spot of my light, in effect making it a like a volleyball sized laser sight.  If that ball of light is center mass then so are the sights.  I could in effect hold the gun out to my side and still shoot relatively accurately.

    Re: Light or no light

I have a light on both my home defence shotgun and my handgun.  If you get a good quality light it absolutely blinds anyone hit in the eyes with it and he cannot see you to shoot.  In a home situation if you have the light in your hand it limits your ability to open doors and light up the bad guy at the same time.  But a gun mount means you automatically point the gun where the light is.

At night it is impossible to aim without a light and having it mounted to the firearm save seconds.

    Re: Light or no light

I really don't need to aim to well with my 12ga.  loaded w/  8 rounds of # 4 and staggered w/ 00 Buck. So the answer for me is NO because I have a shotgun for my main home protection and POI is not that critical because of shot pattern, handgun I would say YES like the SureFire mounted to my 24/7, but that would be the second weapon I grab for.

It it a blunderbuss? My 20" cylinder bore barrel puts all 27 pellets and the wad through a 2" hole in sheetrock at 20 feet.
I don't use a weapon mounted light either. I can see the value to them sometimes, but I don't like the idea of covering one of my kids while I'm all amped up on adrenaline in the middle of the night.

    Re: Light or no light

    Blunderbuss   LOL !!!

590 AI Combat.  20' is kind of close for me, I don't expect to let a BG get that close but my house is rather long, wide and open and I am a light sleeper so I was thinking more along the lines of 30'+  and I know what it will do there. I don't have children or a wife it's just me and my house is brick so I am not to worried about over penatrating and injuring a neighbor and while I am all "amped " up I'll take 9 rounds of buckshot 27 pellets and a 2" hole in drywall anyday over a flashlight and a handgun w/ a full clip of  9's, 40's, 45's ect. . I am very confident in my abilities with a handgun, but at close quarters at night and in the dark under extreme stress  I'll take my chances with a 12ga. Different situations call for different choices of weapons, at my home it's the tactical shotgun in the street's  it's the .357

I generally will choose the shotty for HD as well. I use #4 buck. I bought a case (250 rds) of Federal tactical full recoil. No wussy loads. Thats why I tested it, in my house about the longest shot you could have is 20'.

    Re: Light or no light

no light, i dont like the idea of having to point my gun in the direction my light is pointed, if it happens to be at one of my children, for instinse. plus in addition to my love for guns, i happen to be a devoted flashaholic, so there is a high powered flashlight in almost every room of my house. also while i was working in the city, i was tought to hold my duty light away from my body while aproaching a scene, so if anybody saw the light and decided to shoot at it they would have less of a chance of actually hitting you.

    Re: Light or no light

I have a very bright (and quite small) Streamlight Scorpion next to the bed, and a large Maglight as well. I practice shooting with the Scorpion in my support hand trained on a target, and the rear button makes it very quick to activate. But it is unlikely I'd use it. My wife gives me a hard time about walking around the house in the dark at night, but my feeling is (as mentioned earlier) that thorough knowledge of my "territory". I know where all the furniture is, and where the lights come thorough the windows.

Not to mention two 80lb boxers to flush out any hidden threats.

    Re: Light or no light

    Lights attract bugs and lead.

Keep it seperate and in your weak hand, so you can hold it away from your body, untill it subject, of the search, is found.

    Re: Light or no light

I think lights have a lot of good points, but like most things there are always some negatives. If you have white walls in the room, back lighting could be a problem.

    Re: Light or no light

I have a light on both my handgun and my shotgun plus I have a hand held.  I guarantee that if you hit anything in the eyes, man or beast, with a quality light they will not be able to keep their eyes open and aim their weapon - they will be blind, you will not.  Get a light and test it on someone, even in daylight indoors.

    Re: Light or no light

Room lights would be better than flashlight, but sometimes it is not an option.  I need to go downstairs when something goes bump in the night and need a light.  (I have a security light on remote that works sometimes)

I picked up 2 "Special Forces" 21-LED flashlights at TARGET (I know..FRENCH CO.).  These things are $9 and actually well made.  Heavy aluminum frame, screw tail piece for constant on and a momentary button in the tail for flash.  So bright you would not believe...I blinded myself when I first turned it on.

Every situation is different.  I would rather have and not need, than need and not have.

    Re: Light or no light

Light in the off hand - can always be used to smack the BG up side the head as a last resort if necessary....
