Maverick88:if anyone knows the magic, safe for all surfaces, super solvent lets hear it.
There are scores of cleaners I haven't tried (can one person try them all?), and very few that I have (cuz once you find something you like, you stick with it, right?)... but of the ones I've tried at one time or another--which include Hoppe's #9 & Break Free CLP, by the way--I tip my hat to M-Pro 7 (
http://www.mp7.com). The manufacturer claims it's safe to use on all finishes, and I've personally used it on nickel. I did my own test with this stuff... I cleaned a bore with Hoppe's, then recleaned it with M-Pro 7. I was both surprised & impressed with how much fouling the M-Pro 7 removed, even after I had just cleaned the bore with Hoppe's. You can use it indoors, too (no smell), which makes the wife happy. I love the stuff... but of course, YMMV.
Gotta warn you, though. I know of
one person who claims that M-Pro 7 put a spot into the finish of one of his guns. It's a water-based cleaner, so make sure you remove it completely from your weapon (including any nooks & crannies it might sneak into if you're not careful)... and apply oil, because it leaves a "molecularly clean" surface (in other words, unprotected). Personally, I haven't had any problem with the stuff.
I also like Bullfrog Rusthunter Weapon Wipes for 'quick' jobs while away from the home. Bullfrog Lubricant & Rustblocker (that's one product, not two) is supposed to be
excellent for storage, too, though I personally dislike aerosol dispensers. In fact, I can "kind of" attest to how good it works. I was trying to use it up, and I sprayed it onto a shovel (one of two) that I keep outdoors stored by the trash cans. The unprotected shovel, a pick-axe, and a hoe are rusty, but the shovel I sprayed is bright & shiny. Same is true for a cast iron chiminea on the patio... the protected part (before I ran out) is shiny, the unprotected part isn't. I'm a believer; and it also got a great write-up in a couple gun magazines (that I know of, probably more). See the full line of Bullfrog products at
