  Like was mentioned it would depend a lot on your particular situation.  If you lived in Oregan with bear and moose and lots of shots past 300 yards then the needs would be different from in Missouri where the largest critters are deer and the places you can see more than 100 yards are limited, also if you plan to bug in then weight of ammo wouldnt be an issue but trying to carry say even 2k rounds of 30-06 in a bug out on foot along with other gear you better be a lot bigger than my 6'2" @ 250 lbs.

  Given your statment that you already have the multiple guns and are just looking at which ammo to focus on to stock up, I would say START with the .22 lr ammo.  For the price of 2k rounds of .223 (what about $300 now at least) you should be able to have at least 12-15k rounds of .22.  While .22 isnt ideal for a battle rifle, not many zombies will keep comeing to you when you start pokeing even little holes in them, besides, if you place the shots they will drop 2500 lbs bulls in their tracks with 1 shot and if you have a 10/22 with a few high cap mags then dumping 10-12 into an attacker in a couple seconds wouldnt be to hard and should stop them pretty quick.

  The .22 will most likely be the main grocery getter, have a defensive calibur handgun on your waist with plenty of ammo stocked up for it and that combined with the .22 will handle most situations.  Once you have a truck load of .22 set back and a real healthy supply of ammo for the handgun then I would say put back say 2-5k rounds for a long range large bore rifle (say .308) to take care of any large game and long range shooting or stuborn mutant zombie bikers but this should be the less used round so unless you will be doing a lot of long range hunting of large game then that should be enouph for a LONG time.  Then stock up on ammo for a battle rifle like the .223 or 7.62x39, these rifles would be the best bet to have if you were under attack but you wont be in that situation to offten....by simple odds the more battles you are in the less likely you are to live to see another, besides if you do win theen there should be some spare guns and ammo to feed them laying around and if you are trying to break contact and retreat then even the .22 should keep their heads down, even its detractors here have said they dont want to be shot at with one.

  I have several cal rifles as well as handguns and a reasonable supply of ammo for most of them but when I travel across the country for business the guns I generaly take in case I need something to get home is my Bersa UC 9mm with a spare mag and a couple hundred rounds of ammo (likely ammo to be able to resupply if needed) for any defensive situations at close range and a scoped 10/22 with the 10 round mag and 4-30 round mags and 2-3k rounds of ammo to keep me fed and keep the bad guys heads down (or ventelated) if needed to get me out of a situation.

  YMMV but thats the best solution I have come up with since most of us cant load up on everything at once.  Load up on handgun ammo and .22 first since its the most used and cheapest then the long range gun since it covers the other end of the spectrum then fill in the middle with the battle rifles ammo then just expand each from there.

AR 15 in 223 / 5.56 NATO  for the following reasons

1. Lite weight ammo,  easy to carry a bunch of rounds   - I love the 30.06  but carry 1000 rds and see how you feel. 1000 223 is almost nothing in contrast

2. Lots of ammo will be availible from other souces.  The thinking here is carry what the goverment on all levels has and there will be operetunitys to restock supplys as they present them self.

3. Accurate as can be with great penitrating results.

4. lite weight riffle, easy to carry and run with if needed.  I still love the Garand but lets face it, Its a rock and and the ammo is a rock. Parts and ammo will be harder to find. AR parts will be every where in a shtf situation

Thats my opinion.

Even a Kel Tec 223 pistol is worth a look if a AR is out of buget.

Personally I think if you dont have an AR yet and you wont one, better get to stepping because if O BOMB DA gets in white house all the rules will change.

How about an AR-15 with a Ceiner kit?
Same manual of arms, same gun, etc
You would be able to switch the bolt group and mags, and in seconds go from .22 to .223 or vice versa.  That is my vote.

Anybody have a reco on a good, relatively inexpensive AR-15?

I just built a kit that I bought for $450 plus shipping (almost all dpms parts...) plus the cost of the lower reciever (I found one at a gun show for $70) so total cost was under $550.  I haven't seen a complete rifle going for anywhere near that cost.

Today Winchester, Marlin, Rossi, Uberti, and H&R make rifles in the .357 caliber.  You can get on in the Marlin Model 1894, a copy of the Winchester Model 92 or 73

I was thinking one of these would be a good survival gun.  Shoots 38spl and 357mag.

Thanks. There seems to be a pretty rabid fan base for AR-15s, so I'm considering getting one. And it could share ammo with my Mini-14.

My choice is a folding stock Ruger 10/22. Cheap ammo, effective on most anything , the 10/22's reliability and their FANTASTIC rotory magazines for the 22lr round, can't beat it.

Free Men Do Not Ask Permission To Bear Arms

Thought I would share my last visit to the range.  Took my Marlin 981T, bolt action 22lr with some new ammo.  Up to now, Fiocchi has been the ammo that worked the best through the Marlin, but I couldn't get anything better than 3/4" 3 shot group @ 50 yards and it wasn't consistent.  Some may be due to my inability to shoot straight, but the Aguila Super Extra 40gr copper plated RN ammo seems to have broken the barrier and gotten me very tight groups on a consistent basis and when I backed the target up to 100 yards, it was consistenly shooting sub 2" groups.  I'm thinking that a better scope, would deliver better results with this ammo as well.

The photo I have shown here has a 4" black bull area.  I fired one round and adjusted the scope to lower the point of impact.  Fired another round and did another adjustment.  Then I fired 3 rounds and you see the results.  I'm very happy with this ammo and bought 1000 rounds and will add another 1000 rounds next month.
