Re: OMG Listen to this taped recording!!!! Police hastle a man over his right to open carry.
On my way to the gym at 5:15 in the morning I was pulled over for speeding coming off a ramp and the LEO went off on me about my speed (local northern KY cop, not State patrol). Practically yelling that I was doing over 70. Now I was doing 65 to 70 on the highway before the ramp, but had completely let off the gas to meet the 55 at the bottom of the ramp, and I know I had seen the speedo drop below 60 before I hit the bottom. He came tearing out from the underpass like it was a scene from the Dukes of Hazzard.
He went off for over 10 minutes on how dangerous it was to be going that fast (even though there were maybe a half-dozen cars on the highway at that hour - remember, it was 5:15 am). When he asked if I knew how fast I was going and I said under 60 he got even more fired up, telling me it was close to 75. But when I politely asked if I could get some verification of that, like looking at radar, so I could talk to my mechanic he seemed to shut down, gave me a warning at let me go. Glad I wasn't carrying yet, Lord knows where that could've gone.
I had a friend who went through the application process for the Ohio State Patrol and they turned him down during the psych eval because the said he jumped to conclusions too quickly, even if the answers were right. Apparently that is not an overwhelming qualification across the board.

It's sad but true, it seems much more likely that the younger police officers will go full throttle on you while older officers (although firm) are more relaxed and polite. Some think that if they don't have you "shaking" when they're done talking then somehow they are less of a man. Look, especially for speeding tickets, it should be a fairly relaxed process. Yes, I was speeding, yes, you caught me, you may or may not give me a ticket but there's no need to start ranting and raving and asking me offensive questions. Let's keep it polite.

I carry a voice recorder in the car now, and when I am carrying, many others in Ohio are also because of this.
Voice recorders are catching on among the open carry crowd nationwide as well.

Re: OMG Listen to this taped recording!!!! Police hastle a man over his right to open carry.
Any recommendations as to manufacturers and models? I might like one of those if not too expensive.
It's legal to openly carry an unloaded handgun here. I don't know the reasoning or rationale behind the law, but would speculate deterrence, even though unloaded. I just don't get it. Must be an old statute. Anyway, I know of noone who does it. You seldom if ever hear of it.
I personally think that law should be repealed, and the CCW laws should be relaxed. It's nearly impossible to get a CCW in my State, and I think you can guess which one...most populous in the country...
Why open carry? Feel like being a walking 'target'? I don't get it. Picture everyone walking around with open carry weapons. Assume it is no longer 'shocking' to the public. I still don't like it. That's not the kind of scene I like visualizing. I prefer to be somewhat hypocritical and like the double-standard and subtlety of concealed carry. JMO.
I know, I know, why give up a constitutional right? Or a statutory one? Because it doesn't work. And it's not a constitutional right to carry openly in public. And Heller made it clear there's a constitutional right to a handgun in the home.
I must say I believe it courageous of that young man to do what he did, and foment change in the education of those LEO's in the area. I really liked reading the Chief's letter.

Mason:
brdotson2875:funny thing is theses 4 cops were all young guys i'd say early 20's remind you of the guys who got picked on in school. .
Read your history.. Specifically Germany late 1920s. SA then SS. The above pretty much was the profile of those pukes! and now their actions????
I don't know if something in the training has changed to give them this kind of power trip mentality or maybe it's just the training of the youth in general in this nation. Something is different, and I don't think it's just youth and inexperience because it's not isolated to age. While it may be true that most of the orlder more seasoned officers are more layed back, my experience has been that they all think it is thier duity to lie and distort the truth and to change the law as they see fit(it's like judge, jurry, and prosecuter all roled into one package). I've met some decent officers in my small town, but as for other places I've lived or visited I haven't seen that manny others. Maybe thier being trained to be crooked or maybe that's just the general path of the nation. I can say that it's harder and harder to find honest people these days, the more people I meet the less I trust the lot of man (or women for that matter). It may be an extreame statment, but I think there is an attempt to dehumanize/demoralize the poeple of this country, just like mason pointed to in Nazi germany and the like. A bunch of power triped bullies, who would send you to the gas chambers because "it's the law now".

I don't know if it's a better way to arm yourself, but oppen carry should not be shuned apon. If you have a carry licence I would suggest that you conceal your firearm, but it shuold be every americans right to carry a firearm without a licence. Concealment is definately the better option, and I don't think it would be wise to allow for hardened criminals to be able to conceal carry. my other two cents.
If you do not know what your rights are, you do not have them.

Maverick88888, whatever--
I think the job hardens them, and it also attracts a certain personality type to become a cop. Their behavior goes with the territory. They're not social workers, they are there to arrest you, that is their job. They SHOULD be like social workers but they are not.
Take any mild-mannered person and make them into a cop and I would think that many would lose their 'cool', though it considered 'unprofessional' to do so.
The job sucks. It's gotta be the worst job in the world. I wouldn't want it. To be exposed to the worst parts of human nature and remain human yourself must be difficult, though the job is not all that dangerous as it's made out to be.
The civilian population must always be armed to keep the police and government in check-that was part of the rationale behind the Second Amendment.

Exelent points, You could be very right about it being the job it's self. You must consider the social and political climate though. There are evil men in high places that tend to have a trickle down affect on policies. Most police officers that I have incountered would say that they are just doing thier job. As the policies toward citizens has changed so has the attitude of the officers in general. I would say that the police force of america is drifting closer and closer towards a militarized attitude. You are not a citizen any more, you are a civilian. Take it or leave it, time will tell what will become of all this.
If you do not know what your rights are, you do not have them.

you bring up some valid points they do deal with alot of creeps. but so did the older cops i spoke of in a prior post. and they just didn't act this way. as far as the job sucking i dont know about that. here in pittsburgh cops start out at around 40k a year their at around 55k after 3 years.
plus full benefits all paid, full penision after 10 years on force. is it worth it if you are shot and killed no it's not but 99.9% will never even pull their gun while on the job. i think pittsburgh has had 10 killed on duty in the last 150 years i think 3 were in traffic accidents.
i think more have died in the steel mill i work at in the last hundred years. granted pittsburgh is no la or newyork but whatever the reason alot of leo's attitude's just plain suck theses days their badge doesn't give them a right to treat people like subjects

Re: OMG Listen to this taped recording!!!! Police hastle a man over his right to open carry.
I'm new here. Start the hate mail.
I can't believe how many people are pro open carry. You're being critical of many cops for being hotshots (I agree with that one) but you want to strut YOUR stuff with a gun on your hip. It's going to freak people out. I work in a jewelry store. Should I display my gun to make myself and my customers feel better when you walk in? Is it going to prevent a robbery? Maybe. Or maybe he'll shoot me first because I'm the biggest threat.
Better plan your day. Lets see. I can open carry at the Dry Cleaners, but when I stop at the Jewelry Store and the Bank, I have to leave it in the car because they have signs that say "No Weapons" Hope it doesn't get stolen out the vehicle.
I'd rather not know who is armed, and just assume everyone is.
Anyone agree?
Anyone convince me otherwise?
P.S. I love this site.

Re: OMG Listen to this taped recording!!!! Police hastle a man over his right to open carry.
You show me proof of one robber or BG that open carries? If I saw someone come into my store with an open carry handgun I would know they are not there to rob me..why? Cause BG's don't open carry thats why..thier sneaky little prrick's that eather come in waving it or conceal it until they pull it out, to put it in your face. Your comments hold no weight or proof what so ever, Mine... just watch TV any night of the week for proof in what I say. As for your customers feeling better (being paranoid seeing someone open carry) Thier ignorance of the Law is no excuse. I am more prone to be paranoid if someone enters a store I work in if they have baggy clothes or a coat in the winter, or they don't look you in the eye when you say hello. Plenty of plain clothes Leo's open carry. I can walk into any bank in the state I live in open carry, Its not against the law. It is against the law to carry in a place where its posted no firearms...No ploblem I just won't shop there. I don't even open carry, but I will not condem the guys who do. To them not to practice thier right to open carry means to loose the right. Back in the eary 1900's people were alot more polite to each other..Why? Because almost ever man carried a Pistol, thats why. "Or maybe he'll shoot me first because I'm the bggest threat"...True, but alot more likely move on to easier prey..Thats the nature of punk's that conceal weapon's not open carry them.
I'm not about to tell you what to Post on this forum, But if you are new, like you are with only 2 post...makes you look like a anti-gun person just posing. I'm not saying that you are, I'm saying makes you look like you are. Peace out....

Re: OMG Listen to this taped recording!!!! Police hastle a man over his right to open carry.
Open carry should be legal for all citizens........ and they should have the choice to CC.
I see CC becoming the socially acceptable way to carry, and if someone is open carrying, OH well cause they can and there is nothing you can do about it.
I CC into my local bank in NY every week. I would feel even more comfortable in the bank if a few people were open carrying.
or even places where you work could mandate it has to be CC on their grounds. but public places dont have the option of saying CC or open... I can undertand employees being asked to CC, but I cant see patrons being told they have to CC to come in.

That cop was pissed. Still unclear why he was so ticked. Open carry is actually less threatening because you can see the weapon. I guess its a control thing. Go after the gangbangers like that. Has a LEO weighed in on this here on Bersatalk. I'd be curious their take on it.

Re: OMG Listen to this taped recording!!!! Police hastle a man over his right to open carry.
Sounds like good old AsH has been a victim of some robberies or attempted robberies, and is observant as to how it was in the good old days of the early 1900's, that people were more polite because they open carried all the time. Is that so? Is that true? Is that the reason?
I don't know about that at all. Seems like people have been watching too many Westerns in their lives..
Also, in any event, regardless of whether that is true or not, no punk is going to open carry, so I really don't see any benefit to open carry for the general populace, except to warn the punk of the presence of someone with a gun, who is just as likely to be shot dead, in my view, than deter the punk if he's determined.
Why ask for trouble by carrying openly? Ask any cop. They're constantly concerned I should think, about someone attacking them as they might as well have 'shoot me' pinned on their backs. The thought has crossed my mind after seeing someone open carrying how easy it could be to attack them, shoot them, etc. And besides, who wants to walk around being 'paranoid' all the time, like most cops are..and likely for good reason..
