    Light or no light

For home protection do you prefer to have a light on your gun?

    Re: Light or no light

On a long gun, yeah, but not for handguns. I find it easier and more effective to have the light in my off hand. I can turn it on and off at will, use it at a different angle than the gun is pointing or anything else I feel the need. I'd much rather be holding the light in my left hand out away from my body if the intruder decides to shoot at it, than to have it in front of my face, mounted to my handgun.

    Re: Light or no light

I prefer a light in one hand(turned on as a last resort),and the pistol in the other.

    Re: Light or no light

I don't put lights on my guns. I have 2 flashlights by my bed in case one dies. I carry it in an underhand position so it naturally supports the gun and illuminates area in front of me. Easier to throw at attacker if need be. They're both heavier metal flashlights.

This is a multicultural home. I have Argentinian guns, Brazilian guns, Russian guns, Yugoslavian guns...

Good question.  Probably will have evenly divided answers if all respond.

I don't have a a light on any guns, although I have toyed with the idea.  I guess the cost of one seems prohibitive.  A good tactical lighting system can cost as much as a gun.  So it comes down to a gun or light?  Gun wins.

    Re: Light or no light

Here is the underlying question.  Do you trust that the BG in the dark is not a drunk friend/relative? Identifying the intruder is very important. At what cost? giving location away? or when flashlight goes on and tempararily blinds BG, will your own eyes adjust quick enough to make a decision.

I don't use a light on my guns, not sure if I should or shouldn't.

    Re: Light or no light

I have a 3 cell mag light next to my bed.  1. it will blind an intruder in the dark. 2. it can be used as a handing bludgening weapon in a pinch.  (why do you think the police just carry a mag light and no longer carry the batons?)

    Re: Light or no light

I carry a flashlight in my off hand, in case I need it. I have a different setup for illumination though and it works really well.

Those X-10 modules are cheap and combined with the handheld remote, are a great way to remotely turn on the lights in a room you heard a sound in, while standing outside it in the dark. This lights up an intruder nicely, blinds him somewhat, and keeps you concealed. A whole X-10 setup is far cheaper than a good tactical light.

I keep a cheapo tactical vest hanging next to my bed. It contains the gun, flashlight, X-10 remote, cell phone, pepper spray for drunks/stoners/critters, etc. I can jump into it in a second to investigate a sound, or yank the gun from it if needed.

    Re: Light or no light

I always forget about that.  I have two German Shorthair Pointers. I got them so when I travel for work I dont worry about my wife.  Two dogs and a few nicely placed shotguns make me feel better about her being home alone. they bark when the bears get in my garbage in the middle of the night I can assume they would bark at a person outside messing around.

That German Shepard will make people turn run, cry, and mess their pants.  Only thing that can compare is a Rottweiller.

    Re: Light or no light

I say no light. why take a chance of BG seeing my light coming through house before I see him. since he can see light way before I put the light onto him for me.

beside when it is your home you should be very familure with the inside of your home which makes for your advantage over a BG first time in your home.

    thats my opinon any way

    Re: Light or no light

I also have two EWD's (early warning devices/dogs's) that tend to be really cranky if woken out of a sleep.  They are little but extremely alert and noisy if disturbed.  By their pitch and agression it is easy to tell if it is someone in the family....and all of my family always tells the dogs to shut up if they bark, so I would know if it were one of my two teenagers.

Light as last resort....don't like someone knowing where I am by my light. Element of surprise, and plus I know every nook and cranny in my home which is quite a bit of an advantage over someone who does not, especially in the dark.

    Re: Light or no light

For my night stand gun, I like to have a light.

My prev nightstand gun was a Glock 34 w/ a Glock light.

Now, I am using my SW99 w/ an M5 light. I chose my SW99 insteda of the P99 because I tend to shoot the p99 a bit more, and I didn't wanna have to always take the light on and off.

Don't know if I'll ever need the light there. But, I like having it just incase :)

    Re: Light or no light

No light on my guns..........It seems to impair my vision if I try to use a flashlight........I had rather just hope my "night eyes" and "night sights" do the job!
